Default How can I improve VX.16 and SH.18 as a learning experience?

Hello all.

I was wondering if there are ways to improve the VX .16 and SH .18 engine for on road use, as a learning experience. I know they're "crap" compared to the higher end one's but it'd be fun to make them a little faster, if possible. I run 20% nitro with a medium glow plug. I live in FL so it's hot and humid most of the year. I know the heat and humidity will be a factor. I'm still pretty new to this but am eager to learn.

With that being said...I've tried putting the SH .18 carb into the VX and it fits fine. It also appears to be 1mm wider, unless I'm blind. The VX seemed to be a little quicker on the low end for the three tanks I ran it with the SH carb. (edit) I also use an aluminum flywheel and clutch shoes.

I just figured I'd ask to see if there are other things I can do to make these faster or if I'm just wasting my time. They're great (for newbies such as myself) when you take care of them. It'd just be nice to see what I can do to push them to their limits. Why not?! Again, this is all for a learning experience and fun lol

Thanks for any input and tips.

On the outside of the engine there are some things....

1) better clutch setup.
The engines you mention are mostly used in simple RTR cars. The clutch will probably engage very soon. If you lighten the shoes and/or use a stronger spring(s) the clutch will engage at a higer RPM and so with more power.
2) exhaust.
With a RTR car there isa simple exhaust. With 2 stroke engines there is a lot of performance to find with the exhaust. I know TeamOrion has made some Option parts for Kyosho cars and also a good resonance exhaust for the Kyosho Fazer. Not sure if you will gain a lot but it should be better than what you have got now.
3) gears
In the past Formula-1 cars were alowed to change gear ratio's so for every track they optimized all gear ratio's to get the best out of it

And then there is the engine itself. Like with 2-stroke bikes you can modify the ports, carburator etc for more performance. There are some topics from Fyrstormer modding his HPI RS4 engine to reach 50mph, read them.

Thanks for the reply. I'll check out Fyrstormer.
