I dont know about the 3 port but i ran the d52 last year and the r8 this year so far. These engine are great never had a flame out didnt have to mess with tune at all and will run with the top names. Ic all these big name motors always flaming out and have tuning problem and i have none and the engine are cheaper. Also thanks to Rex he knows his stuff and is great to deal with I dont think youll be dissapointed with this engine line.
As far as 10mins, a motor can only do so much. I've ran the D52 and R8 also, they get great fuel mileage for me (I can get 10mins with the R8 in most tracks conditions), but my experience mileage to a large degree has to do with conditions (ie size of track, long straights, etc) and throttle finger. if you mash full throttle all the time, you are not getting good gas mileage. Rex does have a couple of things he can do mod wise to increase fuel mileage, so you can check into that too. Hope that helps. :) |
Thanks for all the feedback. I think at this point I am just trying to decide between the R8, D52 and R83.

Anyone have first impressions with the new 3 port? I am looking for a new buggy motor. I have heard good things about the Argus motors. Top priority for me is a linear power band and good fuel economy. I want to consistently pit at 10 minutes.

help you with any questions you have about tuning, engines or problems you might have |

I am running one for the fist time this weekend. If you know anyone that has an Alpha Dragon it is similar and should be powerband wise. I also order my engines from the factory with double sealed front bearings as I prefer that.

Can't wait to hear how it runs in "race" conditions! Why do you like the "double sealed bearing" up front better? I am assuming it keeps more dirt out?

I ran the Argus R83 3 port this weekend at the Mnrc rd 1 at the Motodome in Staples Mn. I lapped it in and broke it in on the bench at about 4 tanks on it. I didnt run it in the car before much just a bit on the box for a couple minutes. Went to the track and took it easy for just a couple tanks to learn the track, barely touched the tune. It was making good power at just over 200 deg. I leaned it a bit in the morning practice and ran it no hotter than 240 deg all weekend.
I ended up Tq in the Buggy C-main and they were down to a E main. I won the C and ended up 8th in the B main which for me is a great run, there was fast guys from 5 states and Canada there. (and I race about 3 times a year haha) My impressions of the engine: It has more power than I thought it would but is still really smooth. I had a team guy of mine that runs the R8 run it and he really liked it, still fast but more throttle control on the bottom. I took some vid of Hunter running it in my car I will get up soon. Hunter also won the Buggy A with his R8 so congrats to him! Rex |
Rex, what pipe did you run on the 3 port? How was the run time?
|
Here is a video of the 3 port, I am running a APlus 0801 pipe, 30/9 Byrons fuel. Still running a somewhat rich tune as it never got over 240 deg. all weekend.
This is actually my car with Hunter Holmberg driving, Hunter ended up winning the A main Sunday with his R8 that he ran all last summer. Rex https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FNj_zTyx2Q8 |
I've got about six tanks on my r83
With a 0801 pipe I had Rex lap the piston in for ease of break in I will be running it tomorrow |
Got my R83 on the track today in my old Mbx7 practice car. Super happy with its power. It has plenty of torque and power for buggy. I mostly run a R8 modded in buggy but I will be using this R83 from here on out, that's how much I like it.

Ran my r83 this weekend great all around power a little smoother than my d52 I was running a a plus 0801 pipe

R83
Like what I am hearing from everyone on the R83. Mine is on its way!!! Cannot wait to break it in!!! :)

Just ordered the R83 from Rex to add to the modded R8 in the stable. The R8 is so good that I had to try the R83 as well! I have issues...
