Ok I'm having a weird flame out issue. I have a Orion jerrod tebow addition
Today at the track it flamed out a lot. It would seem to happen in our double double section in the air off the second double. When I would give it throttle in the air to leval it out. It would just die like it ran out of fuel. I would just get a waaaa. Then nothing. Dead. Change glow plug didn't help. It also did it a few times comming off the bridge down back to the track. Also once getting into the throtal on the strat it gave a pop out of the pipe then took off. It would always start right away. So I got it home I replaced the hsn and lsn orings checked for leaks changed the pipe. And exhaust gaskets and the glow once agin. Fired it up on the starter box roughly adjusted it out. The thing will idle for days. But if you run it like 1/8 throtal and then get on it hard under a load I will get the waaaa and dead. Or if it doesn't do that it just flames out. Help pls the only thing I haven changed yet is the fuel tank.

Might want to give that front engine bearing or both bearings a look at. How many gallons on the motor? Have you checked the clutch and the bearings? Fuel tank and line OK? At the very least you know something is mechanically wrong and it's not a tuning issue.

Normally an engine flames in the air due to too lean HSN. After WOT in the air (the engine will rev much higher than on the straight), there is no more fuel left inside the engine when you release the throttle = flame out.
Of course there can be an mechanical issue but 19 out of 20 times its the tuning.

If the engine was revving out like that he would have no need to blip the throttle to level it out. I tend not to believe ghost flames are due to the tune. I see folks constantly trying to tune out random flames with no success. Sometimes you have to start looking elsewhere.

In North America 19 out of 20 times its mechanical........guys messing with the tune when the engine is damaged..... blaming everyone and everything along the way LOL ! but all the kings horses and all the kings men can't make a engine run right again once its full of dirt....... IMO flameouts are seldom caused by tune issues, its almost always something damaged in the engine.......engine runs great for 3 weekends, then on the 4th weekend the think wont stay lit for 5 minutes...usually is not a tune thing....

Talk about different experiences

I know you are a big name and would never doubt your experience. Never the less I'll stick to what I've seen... and I have never had my hands on modified engines, if that could be the reason for your different knowlegde?

i just started on my 3rd gallion with this engine so it has about 2 and 1/4 through it. i will check the fuel tank tonight. seeing as it is not the one that i ran for the first two gallons of fuel through the engine. it didnt dawn on me untill after i read your guys post. but the engine was fine in my other car. duh!!!! lol. i am optamistic that is where the problem is. the clutch and bearing are fresh just changed them all out befor putting the engine on my crurent car. i will do some more digging tonight when i get home. check the tank and front bearing, and swap the tank out see what happens.

If the car it is now is a hotbodies d8 I bet dollars to doughnuts the tank is cracked. In the one season I ran my d8 as nitro i changed tanks about every other week.

I've seen more than enough engines either lean or rich bog around a track for entire races without flaming. Then you see what appears to be a perfectly tuned car flame half way down a straight on the throttle. If that happens repeatedly in a day I would start looking for the problem. A engine doesn't have to be tuned PERFECT to stay running. Of course a tune way out of whack should be something to consider, but if you know your tune is close there's a problem.

I think o got it all figured out I could not find a leak in the tank. But I swaped them anyway. Fired the car up drove it around I bit at the house. Got it dialed in A bit better. And so far no flame out ran two tanks around the house. But I will not know for sure until I can get back out to the track for some laps. Thanks fr the help. I will let u know soon if the problem is actuly fixed. Lol

Bjarne, not sure how euro track surfaces are, but here in the eastern us we get really dusty conditions 75% of the time. That's probably what Neal's referring to.

I agree 100%..a healthy engine will resist flaming out even with a brutal tune....... Once a engine becomes unhealthy they become unstable and want to flameout ....Being that I sell modified engines my work is sometimes blamed for people's flameout issues and 99.9% time when the engines get torn down there is mechanical damages and neglect at the root of the issue....It is very unfortunate but some guys will go weekend after weekend with a flaming engine and never bother to do anything but chase the needles..... After weeks of failures and frustrations they finally contact me and by that time unfortunately the mechanical damages are beyond even my ability to repair...... If a engine starts flaming out for no reason its time to pull it off the track....... no ifs ands or buts...if you continue to fight the engine you are likely just working the dirt and damage deeper into he engine.....So ask yourself, is that last 10 minutes of the race worth scrapping your engine over ? As once dirt gets in the faster you shut it down, the greater the chances are of salvaging the engine.....

Do you guys tune the HSN first? Will it hurt anything if you tune the LSN first?

Werks instruction says tune the LSN first...

Im confused.

I kknow you have to tune everyday and when climate changes etc. but do you guys just mess with the HSN? What im trying to say is once you get the LSN right you leave it there and just tune the HSN?

THanks

Set idle gap .5mm to .7mm(bout half the thickness of a credit card). Then set lsn so it idles good and always set idle off the lsn. It works great!

Haven't read that in a while but Ron leaves out the part that when you start leaning your HSN you need to richen the LSN.If you don't you risk having a lean LSN compensating for a rich HSN. Every adjustment you make to the HSN will affect your LSN.
