All said and done if this all proves to be true i should be pushing 15 min. per tank. I was getting 13min 5 sec. to 13min. 20 sec. yesterday tank after tank and i am not easy on the throttle at all. If this thing gets close to 15 min. with all the performance I experienced yesterday,,,,, he wont be able to make these fast enough :D Scott |

Neal is in the shop working all day today, so if I may,,, he told me the plug in it now is to hot and when i install the works 6 plug i could gain a min. of run time because i will have to lean it out. Also he reminded me that a motor with metal to metal pinch gets at least a min less run time.

It's time for my Nitro Challenge Recap. It has to start about 3 weeks before the actual event because that was when my insanity started...............
After having the nuts drop on my CRE P5 I decided this was my engine of choice for both buggy and truggy for the foreseeable future, so about 3 weeks before the biggest race of the year, which is also at my home track. I decided to sell off all my other engines except a 12 gallon CRE B5 that was pinched 5 gallons ago.....:weird: Stock alpha orange head running great...sold CRE Jammin .21 running great...sold CRE Force JL..gave to my nephew Stock Arrow GTR, new in box...sold But I'm good! My P5 just came into manhood and is running like a rapped ape with 11+ minutes a tank, got a great working (but Old) B5 as a trusty back-up...move forward 3 weeks to day 1 (practice) at the Nitro Challenge. Fire up the P5 after a long bath from Mr. Comp heater and she purrs like a kitten..I'm drooling now..fresh layout..250' straight away..CRE P5...:D Its ripping on the box its all warmed up, its tuned to the nines..drop it down for my 7 minute practice session..running hot laps on a watered track with marshals and the P5 is eating it up like sour cream until about the 3 minute mark of my round when..ghost flame!..WTF! bring it in fire it up, raise the idle a tad. ( I know, I know but thats what we all do first :sneaky:) drop it back down, half a lap, flame, fire, down, half a lap..flame...Oh Crap!!! My round ends and I am beside myself..engine was perfect for 2 gallons without 1 flame out and biggest race of the year...F#*ker! Must be the plug! Go marshal, help a few buds, bring it back to table, heat it change plug, check tune..she's a beast again! Ripping on the box. tune is perfect, plug is perfect..time for my second of 6 practice rounds..Ok here we go..drop it down, tear it up for 3 minutes and here we freaking go again!! falme, start, drop, half lap, flame, etc, etc, etc for the rest of heat #2..Ok Air leak! Air leaks get bad when its all hot and expanded..another delay for race stuff and i'm tearing it out checking for leaks. seal it up good with lucky 7, no visible cracks, new fuel tank, new tubing everywhere, check crank for dirt scratches...5 minutes later its my turn again..start the process all over with same exact results! 3 minutes she's a beast, 4 minutes she's a flame out machine! :flaming: Carb must be bad! Changed the carb, had a master tuner come and take a look, runs like a banshee on the box, everyone saying my engine is fine, blah, blah, blah..wound up running all 6 of my heats with a 3 minute engine that i could not find a problem with other than it dont run longer than 3 minutes!!!....I'm not racing Thursday cause I have to work and its my wife's Birthday but I'm panicking now with a 12 gallon back up because idiot me sold or gave away all his engines! I start texting everyone..I NEED AN ENGINE FOR FRIDAY!!!! First response is Frank L followed quickly by Tom Stober..Frank's got a speed, Tom;s got a brand new CRE B5. I choose the speed so I can blow it up :D..but wait!, someone poisoned Franks Fuel so now he needs the speed..TOM!! I need the B5..mad dash to Toms house late Thursday Night after wifes B-day dinner.Tom puts a Nova carb on it for me and seals it up with some Allesi Black grease..Alright Tom!!! getting to the track at 6am the next morning to get it all set-up tuned and mounted. Put an M2C weighted clutch on it and rip the 2058 pipe off my 3 minute flame out Nova..2058 is my favorite pipe on both engines cause I like low and mid range and believe that's what equals fast lap times. Heat up and prime the B5...its not sucking fuel!! My 1st quali is race #2 starting in 8 minutes..Its not sucking fuel!!!! Turns out all of race 1 did not show up, jumping right to race 2 and I have an engine that wont fire. I unscrew the HSN housing blow into the banjo and nothing, OK easy fix, banjo is clogged! Friends start cleaning out the carb for me while I plead with the RD to bump me into another heat..Ok That works out great and I am golden. carb cleared she fires up and I tune the bitch...she sounds awesome on the box.....just like the P5! My turn! I'm now in heat #4..engine is warm, tuned, new plug, cleared carb, screaming on the box..YES! LETS GO!!!! 7 minute qualifier...I'm off, I'm Golden, I'm sitting top 3..I'm at the 3 minute mark! I'm freaking Flaming out again!!!!! OH GOD! WHY HAST THOU FORESAKEN ME! BRING IT IN, FIRE IT, HALF A LAP, FLAME, FIRE, HALF A LAP, FLAME...I should have stuck with golf!...flame, flame, raise idle, flame, flame. My engine has become a broiler. just flaming everything around it...AGAIN! Its Ok, its something stupid. I have 5 more quali's. Drop it on my table, marshal, help friends, pee, eat, lets get to it now! Check carb, good fuel flow, change plug, warm it up good, check tune, take it over to the field to run some hot laps. Its perfect! It was the tune or the plug, ( or the idle :D ) I'm ready for heat 2. Here we go.....3 minutes! EPIC FLAMES!!!! If I had a golf club I would break it..2 heats wasted..I'm exhausted! Check more stuff, change more stuff, heat it up, Get my Buddy the tuning genius to get a tune on it. he says its perfect. I think its perfect, Tom Stober thinks the bottom end is too lean..tuning Guru says he left the bottom a little fat for race temps..Ok I'm ready, Round 2.. 3 minutes in guess what happens?! Tom is convinced that the bottom end is too lean so we fatten that for my 4th heat!!!.....3 minutes in and the flames are starting to hurt now.... F#*K it, give me my 12 gallon B5! My tuning guru buddy comes over to get compliments on his tune..( no he was not watching ) I throw a golf club at him, I throw a sandwich at Tom Stober for lending me a shit engine and ruining my Nitro Challenge ( Just kidding ) I have my 12 gallon B5 bolted in with my favorite 2058 pipe and ready to rock it and Mr. tune master says...are you ready?...."Is that the same pipe you've been running on both other engines?" :weird: WWWWWHHHHHHHHAAAAAAATTTTTTTT who the hell would think to check the pipe? the seals are good, the springs are good, its nice and tight against the engine and the manifold...yea but its obviously clogged he says. The oil is melting at the 3 minute mark and clogging up the pressure nipple....OH SNAP! THAT CAN HAPPEN????? Yes boys and girls, 12 years running nitro engines I never knew pipes can clog on the inside...:weird: Switch to the 2013 pipe on the 12 gallon B5 and it runs like a top for the remainder of my 2 heats, but its too little too late...What An asshole! I ran all three engines today just to confirm and all 3 were perfect with different pipes...Later tonight or tomorrow I'll post my actual race results.. Special thanks to Tom Stober, Frank L, Aaron Lewis, and Don Akiyama for trying so hard to keep my junk running and for engines! |
^ That sucks to hear man, just a tip but i know it is also a little to late:(
I keep a crock pot in the garage full of antifreeze and i take my pipes apart 2 times a year and boil them for 24 hours. They come out hot and clean, rinse the extra crud out with water and walla you are ready to go. Sorry to hear your bad luck at a big race. Scott |
James you left out the part about how...... OHH yea I won the bet :) my horrible qualifying day was just a touch better than yours. Next year I'll make sure you adhere to the terms. Crisp $50 is the only payment that's acceptable :deathstar
Did that pipe hurt the engine? Because I know the dirty bastard killed mine. |
Both engines ran great today. Nobody showed up to race though. Arizona has a statewide Nitro Hangover. I'm gonna tear down all 3 engines and clean and lube. Funny thing is I know about the crock pot and the anti freeze trick but I always thought it was just to get the crud off the outside and I never really cared how they look.

Epic recap^:deathstar:deathstar:deathstar:D
Lets get that crock pot for the shop! Neal...Any evidence that a certain pipe will yield more run time on the buggy P5? I was just thinking about going Ofna 086, but dont wanna get the 'well your run times arent there because you have XXXXX pipe':p Trying to go by the book |

The P5 is actually a really good platform to work from...it is well built and has moderate port and crank timing, yet a very good base design...This pretty much gives me a open slate to make whatever I want from the engine.......In general it is quite neutral and bland in its stock configuration, but that makes quite flexible when it comes to Clocking it.,...My modified engines have always been good on fuel, but also quite powerful at the same time...Both the power and the extreme runtimes came from the same modifications and till now I have been unable to separate them...When I reduced power I also reduced the runtimes.......Part of making a engine more efficient is making more power out of the fuel being consumed...... The crazy runtimes were a side effect of my power modifications, or visa versa the crazy power was a side effect of my runtime modifications.............Basically my most powerful engines were usually my most fuel efficient..... And rightly so as they made the most efficient use of the fuel being consumed...... Anyways to make a long story short I have been working for over a year now on how to separate the crazy power from the crazy runtimes and I think with this latest version of the P5 I have unlocked the riddle....I guess more info to come as more people start running them..... But in the end this is the first ever mileage specific Clockwork engine....Its still going to be rocket fast, but will deliver the power in a more refined manner then my standard mod P5.... |
Eager to try it, but any pipe showing more run time yet? Ill do a bunch of timed tanks at Fear Farm and see what it gets
|
How will thoose P5 buggy version work on the 9901/2096 pipe? We`re not allowed to run the old 2 chamber pipes...
Sad to read abaout your pain JAZ. I have never had that happend, but i have had old pipes makeing engines not run good, compared to a new pipe. I would not ever found out of that problem! |
ultrasonic
Just bought a heated ultrasonic cleaner, what stuff do i use in it for these little nitro engines, and bearings to come out looking like jewels.Thx
