The same reason a car will idle 10 -15 minutes on a tank. There is somewhat a linear relationship between engine RPM and fuel consumption

Uhm, wrong. If you can shave two seconds a lap off of your times you only have to do three laps to gain the time needed to make an extra stop.

In an hour long main, if you give me the choice of let's say 30 second lap times with 10 stops or 32 second lap times with 9 stops, I'll make 10 stops any day.

30.00 with 10 stops vs 30.20 with 9 stops might be another story though.

I've seen quicker stops then that. It depends on the track and the pit entrance and exit. Some tracks might have a chicane or slow jumps or bump section that pit lane avoids so pit stops only add 5 or 6 seconds to the lap time. Others have fast straights with tight and slow pit lanes and might add 10-15 seconds to a lap. Even if the stop added 15 seconds to a lap time you only need to do 8 laps at 2 seconds a lap quicker to gain a big enough lead to come out first. Just do the math.

Lap times for the top drivers were only 6 to 8 seconds longer when they pitted at the Worlds.

I need a new pit man, but I race in Novice, so everyone has 45 second pit men,lol Our pit lane is also very narrow, and you really have to slow down allot on the approach, plus its on the main fast straight, so what would normally take about 4 seconds to complete, would take more like a minute, with the slow down, and the fill up. Boy I have a long way to go, before I know chit!!

If you want to get an idea of the lap times go to LiveRC.com then to View Live Broadcast, choose the Worlds then click on Race Results. Look at Race 27 the final. How these guys can be so consistent is just incredible.

Ummm, totally, wrong... much easier to drive smooth and save fuel, than to shave 2secs off your lap time... good luck shaving 2secs that will be extremely hard!!! driving smooth will be much easier and I bet your lap times will be quicker!!!
