If it cannot run blinky gear ratios, tamiya just shot themselves in their foot.

Agree. I'd be keen to give this chassis a go, just to be different, but it would have to get to about that below I reckon...... The high internal ratio could stuff it up. Most modern touring cars are around 2.0 these days. Do they have aftermarket gears that you could use?

I'm hoping gearing it for 21.5t/13.5t won't be harder than a new pinion and spur gear. If we can't get it low enough, why don't we increase the motor mechanical timing to compensate?

Because everyone else in their Xray's, TRF's, HB's, etc has already increased their motor timing too. So you're still way behind.

big thanks all who post build pictures!!! aka beta testers

I was just thinking it might take some custom dremel work but i think the gearing will work for vta and other spec classes ....and im a ninja with a dremel

On my tb-03, I used a PRS spur and a CRC pinion (64 pitch). Only two of the screws line up, and if you over tighten them it warps the spur, so use Loctite and do it sparingly. Frankly, it's my least favorite part of that chassis.

Looking at the pictures and the manual, I think you could do the same thing. It seems like the toothed part of the gear rides outside (inboard) of the loop. I'm not comcerned about the gear.

FWIW, I measured the spacing inside the T5/T7 motor mount parts and it's 18.3 mm. The outside diameter of a pinion gear is (N+2)*M, where N is the number of teeth and M is the module/pitch of the gear. Therefore, (28+2)*0.6=18 mm, and 28T pinion is the biggest that will fit inside T5/T7. Building the kit exactly as shown in the manual means the lowest gearing is 5.89:1 at the moment. There would have to be a completely new motor mount design opening up space for a larger pinion to get lower ratios...

The easier path at the moment would be to transplant the TB04 gear diff's, front one way, carbon damper stays, and short dampers onto a TB03 and then work with the gearing in a more open gearbox. The TB04 is probably going to be a 10.5T and lower motor car...

T5/T7 directly touch the face of the motor and the back of the motor mount plate, so the pinion gear is surrounded. Also keep in mind the side of the chassis tub allows limited movement of the motor back and forth...

Looking again, you are right. Max pinion size is a 45. Assuming this is intended to replace the ta05/tb03 cars in US TCS races, I have no idea what to do with this car outside of silver can racing. Even gt1 runs more gear than 5:1.

Upon closer look, the outdrives are supported by metal bushings and not ball bearings. I just finished prepping the carbonfiber shock towers.

So if a 45 is the biggest pinion whats the smallest spur that you can get to work with that pinion??? Creative dremeling help?

i find it hard to believe that Tamiya wouldn't allow this car to have an FDR lower than 5. But then again..... Tamiya still gives you crappy screws with all their kits.

I saw that too. I hate bushings, so I'm ordering some 850 bearings to replace them.

Mentally I'm in a weird spot with this kit now. I want to build it just to enjoy the build and have something fresh, but I don't want to build it because the gearing is so limited.

I guess the first step is I'll dig through my parts box for some other motor mounts and think about modifying the chassis to accept one of them.

If no clear plan comes to mind, then I might start thinking about transplanting all the "PRO" parts to a TB03. The gear diffs, C-hubs, CVDs, short dampers, carbon damper stays, steering bridge, turnbuckles, servo saver, and ball connectors might make good upgrades to a TB03.

Ultimately it might just get built box-spec and turned into a street basher with a mod motor in it...
