Tip:
Put a 3mm piece of well greased silicone hose between the dog bone and the shaft of each wheel to reduce slop.

Tip: Run steel in the front, Alu is okay for the rear but the front takes a lot of wear and impact from crashes

SUGGESTED BASE SETUPS ----------------------------------

Bashing:
Build to the kit instructions and have fun!

Asphalt Parking Lot Racing:
Front Diff: 300k-500k (or Tamiya #42247 Gear differential putty)
Rear Diff: 3K oil in the rear diff for low / medium grip, 5k oil in the rear for medium / high grip

Carpet Indoor Racing:
Front Diff: 300k-500k (or Tamiya #42247 Gear differential putty)
Rear Diff: 7k -10k in the rear diff for very high grip carpet.

The question is why the don’t allow grip sauce? They should mandate a sauce like SXT and have everyone use that

Yes, as much as I dislike the messy stuff, I couldn't imagine driving on-road without tire sauce, as pretty much any tire I know more or less requires its use. Luckily, over here the odorless variants are mandatory, so at least no headaches.

The just doesn’t allow it in the tamiya stock class

That’s lame.. lol. Sauce will make any tyre work on carpet. Without it, your just inviting people to break their cars.. which is good for the hobby shop at track 🧐

I assume that you are not limited to Tamiya brand tires alone, and if that is the case then you might consider a set of Sorex 22R or maybe 24R soft slicks. I have used Sorex brand rubber tires for years and they have been the best slick tire brand for our carpet racing. We normally use the 28R pre-glued sets and we race on older grey carpet. If you race on the newer black carpet that has more grip, you might need to try 32R or even 36R harder compounds.

If you must use treaded tires, try the HPI X-pattern belted tires. These are 26mm wide and will fit the stock Tamiya rims perfectly. I also like the Gravity RC spec USGT tires that come either pre-glued or separately as rubber tires only. These are 24mm wide, and if you buy just the rubber tires be sure to also purchase the proper width rims.

USGT tires are 24 wide but easily fit on 26mm wide as well. In fact they work better on the 26mm wide wheels because the tires are NOT belted and balloon over time. The 26 mm wide wheels reduce the balloon effect quite a bit. Can't beat the price either, USGT tires are cheap and perform well, long life too.

Did they ever offer a hop up alternative to the 3x32 MB2 screw, that secures the rear upright, upper and lower?

One of the things I typically love about Tamiya, is that majority of parts can be use across their kits.. eg from TT02 to TRF420. Tonight however I hit a major hick up.

I purchased 39mm DCJ joints for my TT02 RR. The dcj package comes with a 5x10x3 bearing. Well it turns out, it’s not enough, the cross pin won’t go in. I tried it on 4 hubs. Nope!

You need a 5x10x2.5 bearing.. good luck finding one! 🤦🏻
