Just got a super nice tc4 yesterday. Mght club race it or drift it, not sure yet. Gonna use a tekin rs and 17.5 either way. Any suggestions as far as chassis set up for each. Also, cant find a front one way. Will the ntc3 one work in the tc4?. Will the front tc4 spool work in the rear?

I run 48p 60t spur with 41t pinion, which is 3.65fdr with my 17.5t motor... It's in the ballpark !!!

i have my tc4 geared at 3.51fdr think itll be good for 17.5?

Don't forget to crank your throttle expo up , and throttle acceleration up too .... Without them up, you'll get killed down the straight !!!

This is very aggressive gearing and may be okay for a huge sweeping type track but if you are on a regular to small sized track more than likely you're either going to...

have slow acceleration and maybe have enough straight to get to top speed...

or

overheat and blow up the motor...

The general consensus for blinky 17.5 is to start around 4.0 and gauge the gearing by temperature (170*F or less is a good measure) and on-track performance... normally 4.0 is within a tooth or 2...

4.0 is for belt cars, not shaft drive like the tc4 ! I run 3.65fdr novak ballistic 17.5t at N timing on a medium track, and can hold the motor indefinitely after a six minute run.... You can't do that with belt drive cars period ! At least carry a temp Gun with you at all times, but do not take other racer's belt Car gearing as a guide to your tc4 gearing ... Every tc4/tc3 racer keep complaining about lack of top End when geared the same as other belt drive cars, and forget that they must find the best gearing for their tc4 themselves, and stop FOLLOWING others blindly.... Most of these other racers will tell you to get a better Car, like their's, in the hope that you will buy their junk, so they can get the next best thing out there... If you're interested in getting faster with the tc4, pay attention to those who own and race tc4's with an open mind, but most importantly, pay attention to the signs that your tc4 is showing you... If your motor is cold while being supposedly overgeared compared to others, Check your acceleration,and top speed... If they are better than your competitors, than make sure your runtime is good with smooth driving... Once you can drive smooth with the right setup(RC Crew Chief), don't have any accidents , and you will TQ every time......

sheesh just giving some general advice... no where did i tell him "RUN 4.0 OR ELSE" I was merely giving him a safe starting point (4.0) then advising him to use temperature and track performance to fine tune.

just telling him to run 60/41 3.65 fdr doesn't help him if that isn't the right ratio for the motor/esc combo and track he is running at.

Yes I run a belt drive TC6.1 but i have also run TC4's for many years and still do for bashing and VTA (i'll bring it down to 360 v2 one day if they'll let me run expert and sportsman...)

Based on your opinion mdwalsh is now attempting to start his car at 3.51 which is almost 2 teeth higher than your suggestion of 3.65 (in 64p)... it's his choice obviously but starting from 4.0 and working with temperature will most likely get him where he needs to be within 2 pinion changes whereas starting at 3.51 may result in a burnt smelling paperweight after one run...

Follow AM03GT's advice...

Start at 4.0 and work your way up or down from there, REGARDLESS, of belts or shafts.

I geared both my TC4 and my Sakura Zero S at a 3.86. Both cars felt solid on top end and drive off the corner.

Better to start off slow and cold then burn up your stuff in the first hour at the track.

Follow your instincts ONLY ! At 3.65fdr, my motor was cold as ice, and I am confident that I could have gone way higher.... As for others(belt drives), they were overheating constantly ,with no better Performance. My novak GtB2 xdrive might have caused me to run cold, coupled with the fact that I never touch my motor timing. All I got to do now is practice more often at 360v2, and I will beat them for sure.... I plan to be there on Wednesday's to show the tc6.1 how it''s done !!!!

Setup is the real issue with the tc4... So far, soft is the way to go (green springs all over,or softer), with less than 2mm droop, and spool up front....

All this gearing advice is great. I'm definitely going to be trying to shoot for 4.0 FDR for my 17.5 stock class. Thinking about starting with 60/39p

Question, though. I have a Castle 5700 kv "play time" motor. No track racing with this. So, what would you recommend? Just looking for some speed, but not wanting to cook the motor.

10.5 blinky gearing 5.5fdr , boosted 7.9fdr...... As far as 5700kv, I would recommend 7.4fdr........ Check temps often though......
