what kind of receivers and steering servos are you guys using? this is my first 1/12 car and i am not up on the smaller running gear. i certainly am not going to run the standard size gear i have in my 1/10 pan car.
i do not like that the drive side hub is only supported by one bearing on the out side,is this a problem area of the 12L3? does anyone make a different drive assembally,or should i not worry about it? like i said i am used to 1/10 and my 10L3 drive hub is supported on both sides.

I use the IRS large ring diff and axle assembly. It requires 2 bearings for the pod/axle support, one bearing to support the spur and two bearings for the right side hub. It is very accurate and very smooth.

If you sand the disks like IRS recomends, you'll be able to run with a looser diff nut but still not slip. This will free up the diff a bit more and make the car turn more predictably and more efficiently.

Diffs

I have always used IRS diffs, I have used the " stealth " style for the last 2 years, I thought that the hype about the new " BIG RING " diffs was just ..well hype, so I bought one , put it together and ..WOW the thing is so smooth, , with the extra diff balls you have more surface for the forward bite, and like someone said you can run it a touch more free because of that...
way to go IRS.

Front ends, Has anyone tried back spacing the upper A arms on the ASC, front end, to create a longer Arm ?? I think the intent of this is to reduce camber gain in the travel of the wheel.

Sean,
recievers= use one that does not glitch !
Servos= I use the Airtronics 9145? I think that is the #

The span between the spur and outside bearing on a 12th scale diff is so small that it's really not an issue, but the comments about the IRS big ring diff are more than accurate. It's a bit smoother, slightly freer, and usually lasts longer between rebuilds.

Receiver depends on the radio you use, if you're on 27 band the Novak xxl is nice and small

Servos: Airtronics 94145, JR3025, and KO PDS947, The KO being the ULTIMATE in speed and holding power, but it is a little larger than the other two.

Speedos: LRP Quantum, Keyence Zero-V extreme, or GM v-12 or SX-9. I've seen people run GT7's but I've heard of problems with them. The KO VFS is also a killer speedo but would require the use of a receiver pack for 4-cell use

Diffs! I run a IRS D ring diff. I outfitted diff with acer racing Cermanic diff balls. Built it with Niftech diff lube. I have polished rings with 1000 grid sandpaper. This is the smoothest diff I have ever built! IRS (Dave) says to scuff up rings! I differ with him about it. Because if you use a diff lube & balls that isn't up to it, you will have to do as he has. I'm not a fan of Grade 25 balls either. I have been building diffs since 1992. My XXX-S have diffs built same way as my L3. They have lasted now for 6 months & still silky smooth, when I first built them. I also outfitted L3 with cermanic bearings from acer... They are super sweet! You can go to www.acerracing.com For all your bearings & Diff balls. Their HCCA Diff balls are "grade 10" if you go that route...A little bearing info: balls are graded by for roundness. 1 thru 50. 1 being the best roundness. You really can't beat acer's prices too.

Half of the handling and speed in a 12th scale car comes from the diff. A poorly built and maintained diff can really cause some headaches.

Servos

JR3550 I think is the latest JR mini Servo. It's tiny!! But very good. I use the Futaba S9602 and the KO PDS947. Both are great and never a problem.

The great thing about the JR would be how small it is so it gives you more options on where to place the electronics, transponder...

akrcracer 10-02-2003 09:37 AM

Ray is Jr 3550 Digital?

rayhuang 10-02-2003 09:54 AM

No, the JR3550 is not digital. JR doesnt make a mini digital yet!!

I think the only good digi mini is the KO.

akrcracer 10-02-2003 10:00 AM

Thanks for info!

sands 10-02-2003 10:14 AM

Multiplex makes a mini digital, Mine's on order, so no experience yet.

I meant 3550, the 3025 is the exact same servo, they just changed the badge.
