If I were JUST starting out in T/A, this is would I would do (not saying what you should do, just what I would do)...
First, pick up a USED chassis. Something made in the last 3-4 years that you can get for a low cost with a large spares supply. Buy once and you'll never need a hobby shop in this class. Then, electronics. If you buy right, you won't ever buy again, even if you move to another class.

- Novak GTB with LiPo cutoff, Tekin RS OR an LRP Sphere
If budget were an issue, I'd look to the Novak XBR Sport or LRP Ai Brushless, but remember higher cost usually equals smaller SIZE
- Novak 21.5 Brushless Motor
- (1) Orion 3600 Carbon LiPo
If budget were an issue, I'd look to the Orion LiPo Experience 2400

Apex,
thanks for your opinion.
I'm getting the Novak 21.5 motor.
The Orion 3600 Carbons
Spectrum DX 2.0 radio
Haven't decided on the ESC or charger.
Like I said the car arrived today, I spent two weeks looking for used.
Most where us foam spec and the costs of converting for rubber and the asking price put them within $100 of what I paid for the 008- Found a hobby shop on here going out of business, so I got a good deal.

If you must buy new the Cyclone S is a great value. The only real week point is the C-hubs, but replace them with the HPI Pro 4 hubs once the kit hubs break and problem solved. I have seen the car new for under $125
I personally run an XRAY T2R

The Novak XBR Sport is a great ESC. It is smaller than the GTB and includes the built in LiPo cutoff. I have them in my 2WD and 4WD buggy with Novak 10.5 BL motors. In my VTA I have the SP LPF and I love it as well.

For a LiPo charger, I have two Scorpion chargers from FMA Direct. Great little chargers and they have never missed a beat. LiPo only (can't make a mistake with the wrong battery type) and they balance while charging, so no need to buy a seperate balancer.

For batteries, can't go wrong with any of the Orion packs. I was using the Orion 3200's, but now I am using the CORE 3250's. They are both great packs.

Anyway, those are just my thoughts, opinions and what I am using; and I hope it helps anyone looking to get into this great class. This class is some of the most fun I have had in RC racing; AND we use the official USVTA rules verbatum!

I just started on-raod and VTA only. I had some offroad stuff (LiPos), but I bought:
http://www.rctech.net/forum/showthread.php?t=226224
a xxx-s with a painted TA body and vintage wheels and rims
Then a XBR and a 21.5. I love it.
I can't say if anything has ever gotten warm.
Just another data point.

Hey guys. We are looking at starting a VTA class in our area, but there seems to be some confusion regarding the HPI wheels. We are going to be using 190mm TCs, and the general consensus is that you use 26mm rims with 0mm offset in front and 31mm wheels with 6mm offset in the rear. Is that correct? I just want to make sure that we get the right setups. Thanks!

That's it. That's the only way the wheels come... front are narrow, rears are wide.

I think the bigger question we have is regarding the offsets. Do the 6mm offset wheels allow the tires to fit flush with the body or do the 0mm wheels allow this? That is the problem. We are trying to figure out which wheels will fit flush with the body on a 190mm chassis.
