The best way to teach a "newbie" on backlash is use a piece of notebook paper and put the paper in-between the 2 gears. Light pressure push the 2 gears together and lock the motor down. Then remove the paper. This will give you a tighter mesh but any stripping issues will be eliminated.

For the more experienced racer I like to set the mesh different for stock/19turn and mod. For mod racing use the above instructions. Because of the raw power you do not want to take a chance of stripping teeth off the spur.

For stock/19 turn racing I like to set the mesh a tick on the free side. This will actually help with efficiency and "free up" the driveline.

As a side note the above is only recomended for foam tire racing. If you are venturing outdoors set the mesh a tick on the free side to allow dirt and debri to collect and not lock up your gears. I know this sounds backwards but trust me, it will save your equiptment. If a gear mesh is too tight or a rock has collected your motor, speedo, and battery will heat up and may cause other problems.

Basically setting a gear mesh is a "feel" thing. If you are not sure always ask one of the seasoned veterans that race at your track.
