Cub86 posted the question: Hi. I'm struggling to understand the lay down situation. I run on high bite damp smooth clay and think the conversation would help on my surface but from what I'm reading I need to buy the lay down kit tlr338004. And the dirt gear case tlr332063. But do I really need both from what I've read the dirt case is 1-2mm higher anyway and u don't use the +3mm hubs or the front pivot hrc or Hrc mod. So is the dirt lay down kit tlr332063 is all that's needed to get me a lay down set up that's suited for clay With the components and car I already have. And if I only get the dirt case is there any problems that will need to be addressed IE.. bone plunge . I do know I'll need 1mm spacers on the waterfall to clear the battery. Thanks guys really trying to get my head around this.

Franks response:
Laydown Conversion will work great by itself. You run the aluminum +3mm hubs, the diff is +3.5mm, and you run the HRC front setup. Just follow a setup sheet from tlracing.com (Frank Root).

Dirt Tranny has the diff at the same height as the standard tranny case, and works with the standard plastic hubs. Both are +/- 0mm from stock. When you run this, no need to run the HRC front mod either.

I've found the stock laydown conversion parts to work great for most tracks. The dirt tranny is a great tuning option, but definitely not 'required'.

Something I made, pretty basic. Just to give people an idea.

Both my stock and mod car are coming in around 1560-1565g range. I've gone lighter trying a low profile shorty and have returned to back to a full size shorty.

1620g is quite a bit heavy compared to most, about 50g heavy. Not sure it is all the battery though

I'm not sure what else it could be than. I have a S6240 servo, Justock ESC and a 24k short stack motor. I thought those were all pretty light components. Maybe I need to try a different scale? I was using a hanging scale that was reading kg(1.62) instead of grams. On a positive note, this was the first kit I've ever assembled and it went together perfectly with zero issues. It is also my first 2wd buggy and I find it is easier to drive right out of the box than my 8ight E.

If looking to cut a little weight, where do you think is the best place to start? Titanium turn buckles? can't afford to do the whole lot at once so will slowly work through things.

Also I've never had any issues with turn buckles popping off. Before installing I do the same as others have said here drilling a hole in the top so you can unscrew the ball stud while still connected.

Gear diff: I'm running the standard TLR diff but to get it to fit without drag in the housing I had to shamfer the case on the lid side with a craft knife and then also shim that same side. Now running with zero drag. Next job is to try those kyosho Orings to stop the diff fluid escaping everywhere.

Weight issues?

You could check the following items;
  • Body, the more the paint on the body the heavier it will be.
  • Wheels, are you running 2.2 inch wheels or the 2.4 inch wheels? 2.4 inch wheel and tire setups weigh less. However, each wheel size setup has its advantages and disadvantages.
  • Speed control wires, do you have to much length? Even though you might be using 14 or 16 gauge wire extra length adds weight and resistance.

With that equipment you should be close to 1560. It has to be your scale.

I found a much better digital scale and it comes in at 1585. The battery by itself is 211. I guess it's not as bad as I thought.

I used the AE tie-rods. Lunsfords will work also.

Already done that. Have added another mm to the front shock limiters and reduced the rear toe to 2.5'. See how that goes at the next meeting.

As for weight. Mines at 1535g with no upgrades

A few people have expressed interested in my carbon fiber chassis:

After making my chassis, I had enough left for 4 more. If anybody is interested in getting their hands on one, let me know. I've got everything ready to go.

What rear hubs was Dustin Evans running at Cactus Classic? They look different with four holes for various mounting positions.

Also the body looks like it's made for TLR low rider trans.

How do you attach the front end? what sort of weight saving have you achieved? Have you run it yet?

My car comes in at 1518. 6270 servo, titanium turnbuckles, just stock esc, 14 gauge wires, Trackpower 4400 shorty battery, 2.4 wheels and tires, JConcepts S2 body, Schuurspeed 17.5 and steel front axles. I added the aluminum front axles but need to weight it again. Next is titanium ball studs. It should be round 1500 +/- a few grams.
