When i ran 1/8 scale nitro buggy I would use WD-40 (can be bought in gallon cans). Use a spray bottle and scrub with a tooth brush. Then hit it with an air compressor (worked best to have buggy sitting on a towel while blowing off the excess WD-40 and grim). Wiped off with a towel afterwards and the buggy always looked brand new.
No worry with a little over spray on the bearing or hinge pins.

What about easy solvents?
Ethanol? Isopropanol? Petrol? Esters?

You really need to be careful using solvents and WD40. That kind of stuff is not good for you, read the warning label on the WD40 container some time. My brother inlaw took a pesticides course for the farm a few years ago. The guy teaching the course said WD40 was the most dangerous chemical on the farm.

That's why I don't like using it.

Simple Green, with a tooth brush.
Then make it shine with Maxima SC1.

Check out this video by Jason Snyder on SC1.

Do you spray it over the car or wipe it on?

I spray it lightly without hitting the wheels and then brush the other parts. Its silicone and does not leave an oily residue like WD40. Makes it really slick and actually helps keep the dirt off (for a while).

Also Jason says to wipe it off, find it does a better job if I just let it sit and dry on its own. I usually use it when i am at home during the tear down and can leave it sit overnght. Parts look new.
