There's all the info you need regarding the material. Black Aluminum = Steel

Still the part is
stronger then all the rest , perhaps the coating is the reason why ?
It weights considerably more then the aluminum version so I assume its made of steel ...

Wildcat1971 07-16-2013 09:48 AM

Its aluminum

Possibly...According to the AE site the regular #9600 black plate is listed as "Motor Plate". The #9600B blue plate is listed as "Blue Aluminum Motor Plate". 9600 could be a steel plate, but it depends on whether or not you want to take cherry's word for it. Would have to weigh a std blue and black together.

No, all you have to do is take amagnet to the black one and if it is magnetic, it steel. Weighing them will prove nothing, one is milled and the other isn't so there will be a major difference already.

I just thought about that too...Weighing them will work though as they are both available in non milled and milled versions. 9600 and 9600b are both non milled.

The non milled version is also thicker.

un milled motor plate

the un milled black motor plate is aluminum! i've been using one for over a year with no signs of it tweaking yet! the one i have was borrowed from an old rtr sc10, and no, its not magnetic! ha

lol, only on this thread can we spend 2-3 pages talking about what an motor plate is made out of, lol.

I too switched to the solid blue plate. Car got quieter and it is till straight as an arrow. Plus the non-milled plates are a bit heavier, they can be used to tune for traction.

ya, I'm just breaking stones. That's the one I used to use too. :D

V2A is also steel and not magnetic. (maybe a little bit, but not like normal steel). And btw. why should they use steel? it's not much cheaper than let's say AlMg3, comparatively very hard to machine with a punch, much heavier, can not be anodized and so on. Most likely it's some very cheap alloy. No pure (=not alloy) metal is usefull.

I clean my unmilled plate with lemon pledge vs WD40 for all plastics...

Wild Cherry 07-16-2013 01:44 PM

Note :

The good from all this ?

The inexpensive RTR motor plate will be making the next fancy mill out designs become even stronger ..:)

BlueGlowBoy 07-16-2013 01:48 PM

Maybe I'm missing something....but do we really need three pages discussing if a motor plate is steel or aluminum? What's the big deal?
