Yup, but I found the ends don't justify the means. When running 3 classes it's just so much easier and faster to use the sink to clean tires rather than scrubbing with very little water in a tupperware or bucket. I don't typically recycle foams and since I typically run on a high grip clay track I wear tires out like mad so I'm always buying new tires/foams/wheels so I'm not too concerned with the longterm breakdown of the insert. The foam I was forced to recycle last friday was on a wheel before I started using the leather punch. The foams tend to dry out a bit easier now that I vent through the tire and not rely on venting through the wheel.

Just use some screws and plug the holes, only takes a few seconds more then take them to the sink if you prefer. :batman:

Did he remove the leads from the servo and PT and then reattach them?

That's what I did, just popped the leads out of the servo plug, ran them through the hole and popped them back in. Make sure you put them back in the right order!

I agree on the JC as well. In fact I've been running almost exclusively JC tires lately (with AKA inserts) and I typically don't clean them anymore. I'll usually clean them if I'm at home taking my time but the reality is I seem to be mounting tires more and more at the track in which case I just mount them and go...

Eli , I never wash my tires , just wipe um clean with a rag & water ..
I do use sauce most of the time ...

Take a old close cell insert & soak in tire sauce.

You will find the insert is not broken down by the sauce at all ...

The problem with these inserts is on higher traction the insert is worked extra hard , wear & tear is at the maximum..

If the insert is flat or worn out ?
The tire will fold over making for bad performance such as steering on the sweep or stepping out unexpected on sharp corners..
Like in a real car, a low tire pressure will make for a unsafe drive .

I am not sponsored by any of these company's.

Just giving everyone the reason why we are doing and using...

That's a good idea. Never thought of that. :) I'm going to try that this weekend.

You just have to lift the tabs on the plug and pull the pins out.

Flykrisco 02-26-2013 09:52 AM

I did not think of removing the plug. Darn. I did however make a slot for the plug to slide through. Here's a pic. I don't I get any chassis flex because of the slot. I'm glad to see other people do it. That wire poking over the bulkhead was bugging me. I try to keep it sole and clean.

Did you ask your AKA guy why they came out with those stupid tire cleaning wipes if their tires don't need to be cleaned before mounting?

+1 I pick my cleaning wipes up when I go out for BBQ. :sneaky: Seriously, just use Simple Green, Windex or motorspray to clean the beads.

Wild Cherry 02-26-2013 10:56 AM

Have to spray a little vegetable oil to stop the tire from sticking inside the mold ....

just picked up a b4.2 and havent gotten to mounting electronics yet but i see alot of people doing the custom little tray near the rear tower. why is this? is running it directly on the chassis in the battery tray not permitted? also what about having a transponder and rx in the battery tray? thanks!
edit: forgot to say the esc lol

I read a couple posts back about cleaning tires and water on the foams and I had to chuckle... I used to be horrible with this because I made the holes in the tire so big with my leather punch LOL.

You live and learn :)

As far as which foams to use, personally I love the AKA foams for regular club races OR if they are already used (saved from old tires). If I need to mount up a set of brocodes at a big race and I don't have used AKA, I look for Proline foam because it breaks in quicker.

Another tip I learned last winter... Wire brush your new tires after they come off the track...it helps them break in quicker. We were doing it out of necessity at one race because the track was so wet that the tires caked up and liked the side effect.

It's because we all like to live vicariously through Ryan Cavalieri. If I was him I'd mount my ESC upside down for some photo ops just to see how many people on rctech followed suit.
