Slipper pad maintenance.

Took a look at the slipper pads on my buggy last night, they’re a bit glazed. Is it advisable to remove the glazing with light grit sandpaper?

Yep.

Try 150 grit. Rub'em around on the paper on a flat surface, get them roughed up a bit. Just take enough off to get the glaze off and put'em back on. Go Racin'.

I've got a loud "chirp" coming from my buggy when I hit jumps, likely my spider gears I'm thinking. My drivetrain seems loud. Ya, I land sideways & cartwheel more than even I like.

Are you guys replacing your internal gears with the NT1 steel gears (335030) or the newer 2014 composite gears (304930)? I'm not Martin Bayer or Tyler Vik - what do club racers replace their gears with?

I may have answered my own question.

Its your bevel gear... replace, lube, and readjust your slipper.

Funny, when new the Xray was practically silent. Now, it makes a loud "whirr" sound when on the track. I am using the new Spec R front double jointed universals, so I may try switching back to my stock universals to see if that'll quiet'er down.

Update - upon closer inspection - nothing 'seems' broken or out of place. The pinion, 35T bevel, the internal diff gears - all seem ok, no chipped teeth. Hmm. Just because I can't see it, doesn't mean they are ok though does it?

Anyone know when the new aluminum 35T bevel & steel pinion will become available?

I'm running the 1258 tg in my XB4 and have no issues at all, kinda impressed with it actually. I'm running the Tekin RSX ESC and only running 6.0v to the servo as the optonal 7.4v seemed like overkill. Stick with what you have and spend the money on something else, you'll be glad you did.

My 2014 XB4 always seems to be a bit louder than other 4wd buggies, last night it was noticeably louder than normal to the point that I pulled it off the track. I noticed the pinion/spur gear mesh was a bit loose so I tightened it up a bit and it quieted down considerably. I also sanded down the slipper pads a bit as they were getting glazed up. The other guys at my track running the 2014 XB4 also thinks the buggies are naturally a bit louder than other buggies as all of our sounds relatively the same. Of course there’s “normal loud” and “Uh, wow something is wrong loud”. When’s the last time you went through the entire buggy to make sure everything is clean and lubed correctly? Now that we’ve moved to our outdoor track I’ll be tearing my down every two race nights just to make sure everything is good.

For the record the only thing I’ve broken so far was the upper deck which was entirely my fault. I’ve had zero problems with my drivetrain so far, I adjust the slipper a bit on the loose side but our track is also mid-bite traction so there isn’t as much stress on it as in high bite conditions.

Right - I guess loud is relative then, lol.

There's a nice "whirr" and a bad one!

The other two XB4's at my track are whisper quiet in comparison. It might be the spur/pinion however. I had all winter to fix it and lube it so it got done. New parts mixed with this chirping issue make for a slight mystery for now.

the barking sound is your bevel gear. replace it, lube it, and reset your slipper and it will go away (please read post #4775... lol)

Yes!

And the prize goes to Joey - it was the front 35T bevel and ring gear that chipped, not the rear like i was so certain it had to have been.

thanks Xb4'ers!
