SC10 Thread Part 2

Are you binding anywhere around there?
For a axle just to brake well driving normally doesn't sound right.

I'm with you guys. I'm breaking hex axles like they are made of plastic. Right at the hole for the pin everytime. I keep a ton of pins and axles as spares because it happens even with a slightly akward landing. You really have to drive well with this hex conversion it seems. Wish I would have never done it.
But now all my rims and tires are hex so I'm sticking with it. Axles and pins are cheap enough.

I wonder if its from the sloppy fit of the hardened steel pins? Mine broke at the pin hole as well but it was from an awkward landing on a high bite track. The one I saw break this weekend was after not quite making our triple.

^odd with the broken axles. I've been driving mine hard for over a year, never replaced one. I've hit plenty of stuff, I promise, and I was even running the Castle 3800 motor for a while, so I hit stuff hard, too... Same with a buddy of mine, we both went to hexes on the 2wds when we got 4X4s, and he hasn't broken one either...
I think I have the non-FT rolled pins in there, but I'm not sure. I think I kept the FT Hardened ones for the rear where it needs the extra strength.

I agree on the front hex axle, there is a quality control issue at AE on those. I had them for 2 weeks and was backsiding a jump when it broke off at the axle pin as well. I rarely crash and if I do its not bad at all so thinking there is a bigger issue here that AE needs to address with who is making these for them.

I agree with Mike K above. There's really no need for a pin at all, especially with clamping hexes. The C clip is really lame too. A solid axle with a crush tube would be perfect. Wish I had a metal working lathe.

ok, I contacted AE. I have never gotten anything but the best support from them. So I decided to post the body of my email and their timely response on this forum.

" I decided to convert my kids sc10 to hex so she could use my SC10 4x4 hex wheels. I picked up a brand new hex conversion on ebay a few weeks ago and finally installed it on friday. After 3 laps at the local track, she was rounding a corner and her wheel fell off. I figured the nut fell off, but that is not what happened. The axle snapped in half. She hadn't even crashed yet. As you can see front the pics, the axle, bearings, hub and caster are all brand new. I have my b4 converted to hex and have crashed it very hard many time and never had an issue. I was running the AE alum front hexes and the same role pins the SC10 RS uses. I am 100% sure the hubs were built correctly. I know things break in racing, but I have been doing this a long time (since 87') and I can always tell when I deserve a break. This broke way too easy."
replay from AE:
"I can send you out the axles. I will also send you out a self addressed envelope to get the bad axles from you."

That is cool that they are going to send you new ones but are they going to solve this re-occuring problem... I've broken two being to the track a total of 4 times with the sc10. The first one was definately over tightened but I learned after that and after the second broke I decided to stock up and I now have two packs of the axles as spares.
I raced for the first time yesterday in the sportsman class and got 4th out of 7 people with a 13.5t motor which I can say im happy with the outcome. But the whole time I was worried about going out in the practice before the main and breaking the axle, all because I wanted to see if I could clear the triple after I made changes.
