So, we're in a census that the gears 'in' the diff are stripped up and skipping. Well it's worth a shot. Thanks guys.

I think when you take it apart you will find it hard to see anything really stripped. Clean them up really good and take a look, you will notice more of a polished, rounded appearence to the crown of the side gears. Your shims are probably no longer flat either.

Keith.

So with regards to the rear end clicking issue. Looks like it may be the planet gears, huh? I guess I'll just cough up the dough and buy a rebuild kit. Don't want to just try shimming possibly worn parts as it's a p.i.a. to take this truck apart again. Thanks for the insight guys.

Dude I shimmed mine about 30 packs ago and am not having any issues since i shimmed them . I think the Diff housing is the culprit and needs to be shimmed on some straight out of the box . of course you can do what you ant its obviously your choice but I Personally had really good luck shimming my sun gears out a smidgen . Its the same issue the 2wd diffs had .

I got my sc10 4x4 as a used roller in a trade so excuse me for not knowing this, but what shims are you guys using in your diffs?

Ok so what shims are you using on what gears? Id like to know as I'm having this exact same problem. It would be awesome if someone did a quick tutorial on this.

Thanks,
Dan

The shims on the side gears between the outdrive pins and case.

Order a rebuild kit and you will most likely need a new case also as the bushings will be worn out allowing the outdrive to move excessivly and leak.

I used the old shim and a new shim under each pin. I have heard the kits may be coming with thicker shims and have also heard people using Traxxas wheel shims but cannot confirm. When it is back together make sure you use spacers in the shocks to limit suspension travel so the outdrives are not forced up by the CVA shafts on full compression.

Keith.

Now is this the gears you all are referring too? And by shimming do you mean adding washers onto the end of each pin? 1 on each corner or just 1 on either side of each pin?
(I think these are gears for SC10 2wd but you get the idea)

Nope, I call those spider gears. The big gears in the diff halves that have the slot for the pin in them. The shim goes between the pin and case.

nonono! shim under the sun gear(shim before the pin) to decrease the side to side playof the outdrive in the diff case.

Here?

There seems to be some confusion on spider vs sun/planet. The sc10 4x4 has spider gear differentials where the 4 small gears on the pins are the "spider gears" and the two larger gears on either output shaft are the "side gears". A planetary gear diff looks like this:

Traxxas planetary gear diff

The center gear is the sun gear and the smaller outer gears are the planets. The main difference between spider and planetary diffs are the beveled/angled vs not beveled/angled.
