ThunderbirdJunkie's B4 is ballistic on 2S with an 8.5...3S is really too much.
So I bought a 1406 4600kV Castle 4-pole motor off a friend, and unfortunately, per the Reedy tech at AE, the stock XP SC450-BL ESC won't work with this motor. I mean, it'll work as a firestarter, or to give off smoke signals to very small natives, but not as a functioning ESC.
I need to find an ESC that will work (well) with this motor, so I figured if I knew how many amps or watts it would draw, I could find an ESC that could handle it and go from there. I did some research and was able to find only one mention of the "possible" wattage of the motor at about 500 watts under normal load, 900 watts peak. (This means it would draw about 67 amps to 121 amps at peak load!)
But, as usual, I wanted to get some exact figures, not base my purchase off some secondhand guess in one post.
I called Castle, and the guy I spoke with claimed they didn't give out figures on amp draw for this motor, nor would he provide me with any technical specs because they are "meaningless". When I asked how I was supposed to buy an ESC based on this information, he said "get an SV2 or an MMP, any other ESC will burn up". "Go buy one of those chinese ESCs, burn a couple up, you'll come back" (Castle motors are manufactured in China, ironically) ... Naturally, this gave me some pause. The only ESC's that will work with this motor are manufactured by the same company? Don't you love being a captive audience??
I've also read about some issues with the $60 SV2's and this motor (and others), so it behooves me to get the $120 MMP to feel safe. Something doesn't feel right in the pit of my stomach though, with being forced to buy ONE particular ESC.
Maybe the guy is right. Maybe Castle 1406 motors MUST run with Castle ESCs. But my spidey sense is definitely tingling that something's amiss, and I don't know why.
He seemed more interested in pontificating about how Castle is better than everyone else, and everyone else is a bunch of liars selling inferior products. It also seemed like maybe he was a Niners or Ravens fan or something, because he sounded none too pleased with my line of questioning.
Any opinions on this? If nothing else, I thought it was kind of interesting.
In other news, if anyone has a New in Box MMP they want to sell for $50, PM me. Oddly, I haven't found any for this price in the For Sale/Trade Forums..

Tekin RS Pro, one of the higher amp Hobbywing speedos (XErun 80a?) or an MMP...whatever floats your boat...but the RS Pro will be the best speedo to run with motors that are appropriate for your car.

I know you're trying to be helpful - really - so don't take this the wrong way at all... But when somebody tells me the motor I just bought is TOO POWERFUL for my car, I gotta admit, my inner Tim the Toolman taylor grunts approvingly. Thank you for confirming my purchase was savvy. Now I'll just need to figure out a way to replace the hole in my garage door when your warning goes unheeded.Seriously though, the purpose of this motor was for ripping around in the streets or large flat-ish dirt lots, not for small track racing. I completely agree it would likely be wayy too much for that venue.
cheers!

yeah, don't over think it. Try one. See how it feels. Try the other, see if its better for you. Neither is right. They are different because everyone drives differently.
After you have tried them both, then you will be able to say Oh this one gives more steering or more rear end bite or more rainbow flavored skittles.....
