I figured there would be problems with the xxxs platform for offroad, but there's always the "the xxx4 will be out soon and it will be so much better than the xx4" over and over again; it makes me uneasy about getting a xx4.

What can be done to make the xx4 require as little maintainence possible (i.e. belts skipping and other stuff requiring the removal of 50 screws just for 1 problem)?? Thanks

XXX4 - I had my doubts also but I feel that Losi will build the car eventually. I built one just to see how hard it would be and to see for myself if the driveline would hold up. I have only ran a pack or two thru it, in between racing at CRCRC, but the car shows a lot of promise. I was very worried about the diff size but believe it or not, the car has better front bumper clearance than the XX4. You have to adjust ride height slightly different than you are used to. The car (with out a one-way yet) had excelent turn in and good on power steering. The only problems were with the jumps, and that was more than likely setup issues and the lack of a one way. It was very touch to fly the car, throttle changes effected the car quite a bit without the front one-way.

As far as belt skipping, I started out with the belt only slightly tensioned and it would click under braking, and once in a while under accel., if I hit a bump or dip. I didn't even realize how loose I had it set. Next time I am going to run it with the belt considerably tighter. I played around to see how tight you could go before there was a major increase in drag.

As it was, the car had amazing acceleration but felt about the same on top end as my xx4. I geared it to achieve the same overall drive ratio as I would for the same motor in the XX4. With the added accel, I think an extra tooth on the pinion is doable.

Guys:

I'm new to the Losi XXX and XXX-T. Tried to find a chart that explains the color codes of the spur gears on the Losi site. No luck.

I'd appreciate it if somebody could post this info.

Thanks,

Joe

schumacher - Instead of adding to the steering knuckles as you did, I added length to the bellcranks themselves. It took a few tries to get the right amount of offset but as it is right now, the car has the same steering throw as my XX4 and just slightly more ackerman. I want to move the steering pivot posts forward to eliminate some of the ackerman but have not gotten around to it.
That will allow me to remove the extensions. The wheelbase right now is the same as a XX4 and I have room to go shorter or longer on both ends of the car. It has 25 deg. of caster (10 in the arm/15 in the caster block), same as a XX4.

The shock towers are hand made. It uses .9 shocks in the rear with 1.0 shafts and .6 shocks in the front. I am going to make both new front and rear towers shortly. I used the XXX-S camber locations as templates for these towers and they are too high both front and rear. The new rear tower will probably incorporate a camber mod while the front will just be lowered.

As far as a body, nothing that is a direct fit yet. I did, just tonight, modify a xx4 body to fit with some flexing. It isn't pretty but it will cover the electronics. I am still waiting to find an MX4 body lying around that I can try. I think it would fit with some minor adjustment.

The car has only been run once so far and I broke it on that run. I had initially slapped a XX4 Stadium truck body on it to protect things. half way through the pack I decided that the body was holding me back so I took it off and tried the car. Big mistake. I landed bad off of a jump and it took a tumble. Be careful, the chassis will break where the towers mount. Fill the cavity flush with JB weld and consider adding a shocktower brace of some type, at least to the rear. I just finished a quickie rear brace for mine. I will take pics when I get a chance. Right now I am packing to go to Florida for the Losi Race.

Yokomojo -

Color codes for XX,XXX series of cars.

90 - Orange
88 - Green
86 - Red
84 - Purple
82 - Yellow
78 - White
76 - Black

Wow, this is the exact reason I came to this Losi thread was to ask about the status of the XX4... I want to get one but am curious as to when or if a xxx4 will be released. Does anyone know anything about it? I can get a xx4 in great shape for cheap so was wondering if I should just do that if I want to race this off-road season. Has Losi said anything about the car? If so what?

Thanks,
Jits

JitsuGuy,
Todd Hodge and Brian Kinwald were out here racing in the April Fools Classic this past weekend. Todd and I were marshaling the 4wheelers and asked him if Losi was going to release a xxx4 anytime soon. He said that they were testing but not sure if a new buggy would be released.
I would get the xx4.

Try 15 or 16/86, or 16 or 17/88 for the 9 turn

86 = red spur (stock)
88= greenish yellow spur

Skip or Jason- I need some set up help. I'm running the MF box set up on my MF XXX-T on dirt that is a hard surface, but keeps a fluff or heavy dust on top. I've tried moving the ride height around front to rear, etc. but it just seems like th set up is too stiff. I could be wrong, maybe it's too soft, but it actually begins to feel pretty goos when they wet the track- which would make sense if it's too stiff. I'm running the kit tires (x-2000's and 7 ribs) with PRoline 2 stage foam in the rear. I was thinking the IFMAR pin in a pink compound (as you suggested previously) might be better, but I still think there's a lot more to be had in suspension set up. Do you have or know of a good set up for this kind of dirt? It's kinda like the difference between clean smooth concrete (decent traction) and dusty smooth concrete (traction? what traction?)

Thanks for the help in advance guys....

BigDogRacing: I'm not Skip or Jason....But, I want to be Skip or Jason....hehehe

Remember TIRES,TIRES,TIRES.......You can do a little tweaking with the suspension, but tires makes or breaks the truck.........

another thing on a track like that is the diff/slipper setting, set it a little loose....

We have a few tracks like that in Region 5, Skip or Jasons set-up from Uncle Joes should get you close......they may not have a truck set-up from that track????

Thanks Tres- if not truck set up, then a XX4WE set up would be great for the same track too...

On tires, I was thinking that silver IFMAR pins would be good like Skip said in the post on tires and blockhead/X-2000's for the XX-4. Last fall the X-2000's were better on the buggy than the IFMAR pins....
