Servo jitters

So my 7955s have the jitters. My project is not RC but an aiming device, so the jitters, while very small for servo standard, get magnified a lot in this system.
I have read and it seems the potentiometer is the cause. The pot gets between two values and the servo jumps between two positions.
I was thinking about a gearbox for stability, added accuracy, and the raw vertical support (the load on my system is vertical).
If I do decide on a gearbox, and this is where I am somewhat confused, is that I don't want to go overkill on the x:1 ratio. The 7955 has 450 steps per 90 degrees, so, if I went with a 5:1 would that increase my resolution to 2250 steps/90 degrees? Or would the resolution still be 450/90, but now my rotation is slowed by a 5th?
Or maybe there a solution other than a gearbox?
