bought used 17.5
I bought a used 17.5 and I am not sure if it's the motor gearing or what but just been a dog for me.
small track (about 80' straight - TQ RC Racway if you need to know). Running Tekin RS, Top Photon Sedan, 25deg timing on the motor 4.1 fdr, running fan on motor comes off at 145 (F). Just seems slugish and people are passing me on the straight like I was running a 21.5. Not sure if the stator is crap, or what I need to do . . .
tried running it in 1/12th and seemed like a dog there too . . .

Run 2 minutes and check temps the first time. I repeat run 2 minutes and check temps. If they are over 140 ish stop and try something else.
I don't run a ton of 17.5 but when I do I'm always below 4.0 no matter what track and 30 degrees timing is usually optimum.

I've been running this motor for about 10 months 3 times a week on the same size track. I've been gearing around a 3.8-3.9 with 30-35 deg of timing in blinky mode, motors been coming off around 155-160.
I've recently started upping the gearing and found the motor to run a little cooler with a higher FDR like 3.6 with same timing.
For the first few practice runs make sure you temp often to make sure it's not over heating. Of course if your setup is not efficient and your driving is all over, this gearing will not be optimal.

On my blinky 17.5 I was 3.77 FDR, 40 timing, and coming off after 6mins barely warm at 40-45C max, it was a cool night though, and it's a fairly tight track.
I would have geared up, but someone 'borrowed' my 36T pinion, so I likely would have had to go up two, hence me cranking the timing to 40.

If any of you want to cool the motors a bit more easily;
I have found that by using computer heatsink compound between the stator and the can it transfers the heat more effectively.
I also use some between the outside of the can and the heatsink pictured above in post #348

In the category of "don't try this at home", pinions I thought I'd never use, by end of this weekend, I was 66/40 tooth, on a Photon with 2.0 trans, so 3.30 FDR, nearly a 61mm rollout, and at one point in the cooler afternoon of Saturday, I was timed near 40 degrees cause I was out of pinions, and still coming off at 55-60C.
Err, yeah I think I like my Thunder Power, drove like a newbie, but never lacked power, never came close to overheating, and did not seem down on speed to anyone in the heats I ran in.

up your timing to 35 and gear to about 3.8 or 3.9 with high torque rotor. and you will see the power. the red rotor was very sluggish for me in sedan but excellent in pan car. currently my Tek 6 is geared this way and has gobbs of punch and great top end at tq.

does anyone know if the stated 20 degs that the motor comes set as standard is actually 20 degs?
