Cub86 posted the question: Hi. I'm struggling to understand the lay down situation. I run on high bite damp smooth clay and think the conversation would help on my surface but from what I'm reading I need to buy the lay down kit tlr338004. And the dirt gear case tlr332063. But do I really need both from what I've read the dirt case is 1-2mm higher anyway and u don't use the +3mm hubs or the front pivot hrc or Hrc mod. So is the dirt lay down kit tlr332063 is all that's needed to get me a lay down set up that's suited for clay With the components and car I already have. And if I only get the dirt case is there any problems that will need to be addressed IE.. bone plunge . I do know I'll need 1mm spacers on the waterfall to clear the battery. Thanks guys really trying to get my head around this.

Franks response:
Laydown Conversion will work great by itself. You run the aluminum +3mm hubs, the diff is +3.5mm, and you run the HRC front setup. Just follow a setup sheet from tlracing.com (Frank Root).

Dirt Tranny has the diff at the same height as the standard tranny case, and works with the standard plastic hubs. Both are +/- 0mm from stock. When you run this, no need to run the HRC front mod either.

I've found the stock laydown conversion parts to work great for most tracks. The dirt tranny is a great tuning option, but definitely not 'required'.

Something I made, pretty basic. Just to give people an idea.

NP. Yes the shim on the hub is still there. The preferred hole on the hub is back row, middle hole. Also remember that on the 3.0 these hubs should be reversed (L on R) and (R on L). The hubs were originally designed for the 22-4.

I Just looked at which way the ball stud holes in the hub matched the holes used in the plastic hubs. Of course there are two more holes on the inside, but I suppose I've got them on correctly.

So you didn't switch them?

Has anyone tried a set of these in their 22 or any other vehicle? Or similar slipper pads....

I don't see them marked R or L, but it matches the assembly drawing that came with the laydown kit.

I use the RC Shox version (Garodisc) in my 22T 2.0. IMO they are more consistent and engage more smoothly than the TLR pads. Here's my review:

I'm thinking of picking up a pair of the Universal driveshafts (TLR232006) for use on a high-bite indoor astroturf track. These are labeled 66mm. Given the CVD shafts on the 22 3.0 have been changed to 67mm, will I be able to run these without a spacer/shim? Maybe the geometry is different? Does anyone have some experience with running these on the 3.0?

You should have no problems running them. Just use the axle shim.

They should work great on that surface. Just use the 1mm axle shim, and you're good to go!

pretty good article here worth a read to get a better understanding of selecting the right length drive shaft for your track conditions:

I started out with the stock 66mm shafts and no axle spacer, and the rear end would get a little twitchy on me from time to time when the track (dirt glue spray) got a little dusty toward the end of a race day with too much foot traffic (especially with a large novice turnout and lots of kids running all over the track), I later switched to 67mm shafts with the 1mm spacer and now I manage to get far more consistent traction, sometimes my car will still be hooked up on rails when most others are spinning out of control on corner exit.

whats the best way to reduce dirt laydown transmission noise? I have used the black grease on the gears and it didn't help much. Is my case screwed together too tight?
