We asked Jim Deiter that last year at the birds and it was a resounding 'no', there is no mechanical benefit to any combination resulting in the same ratio... It was explained that the only benefit of different spur/pinion combinations resulting in the same ratio seems to be where the motor ends up on the chassis , as far as the balance or feel of the car goes... You figure out the FDR you want and choose the combo to achieve the placement of the motor your after.. hope his answer helps...

Awesome, I thought someone would have looked into this before and spent time researching the pros and cons!.
I havent really felt any difference myself, the only thing I think I could add is when you run a larger spur, when changing the pinion gear the ratios get wider so you have less fine adjustment. around 70 spur seems the sweet spot for my liking

I wanna hear news about the 2012! Who has it?

Hi people !

I'm looking to buy the 2012 Xray when it comes out . Since all my cars are Xrays these splendid machines but the problem is that these cars are a very rare sight these days at my track , since everybody else is running mostly AE cars . This means that the closest I can get to parts is in a neighbouring country . My question is , which parts do you reccomend buying with the kit , just to be safe ? Also , what can we expect from the 2012 kit ?

While on the topic of FDR, I could use a little advise here as well.

I am almost finished putting my kit together and am running the stock spur. The track I mainly run at is grey indoor carpet (non RC specific) and is very small. It is a very technical track due to the size. Most lanes are only around 2.5 feet wide and the track ends up having lots of 180 degree turns. The outer dimensions are 60' by 30'.

Here is a video a fellow racer shot that kinda highlights how small the track is. We run rubber tires and 17.5 spec motors. Kinda looking for some good starting spots as i was just going to start with the setup sheet provided in the kit and then go from there.

looks fun, the best fdr would probably be asking the fastest guy there what he is running.

If I were to run there I would start around 4.5 FDR and then go lower until motor gets too hot.

HAHA 60c yeah, i think 60c is around 150-160F. It gets too hot in Australia here to use farenheit, we would run out of numbers too quickly lol

You really dont need much, in a year of mod racing the only parts I've broken were one front knuckle, one top deck, both in extraordinary circumstances, and some rear belts (gear diff)

I addition to my earlier questions I am looking for clearification on the setup sheets.

There is a spot which calls out "shim under shock." The line doesn't appear to point to the shock at all. Where is this shim supposed to go?

Also, I can't figure out the the wheel base markings. There are different boxes for front and read but them don't really tell me where to put the shims. I know I am overlooking something.

What is the inboard and outboard toe? I think that it means the hub carriers built in for outboard and the inboard is set by adding shims...correct?

And finally, many of the shims call for 1.5mm shims. Are these something I must order as my kit did not come with any 1.5 mm shims.

You have that backwards. Going up or down a tooth on the pinion is a smaller adjustment the larger the spur.
