Friday I received the new OG Spec premounts fresh from the factory in Korea to test out at West Coast Raceway for the 1st XRAY Challenge to be held there on April 29th - May 1st 2011. They are mounted on the EXP rim (EXP-WAWH) with the Aqua Medium insert (EXP-M). I waited toward the end of the day when most of the TC drivers had left to start testing to ensure that the grip had built up on the track (indoor asphalt) and also so I could have as close to uninterrupted sessions as possible while testing. I put a total of (7) 6 minute sessions on the tires and they look that same on run 7 as they did on run 2 with NO loss in performance!!! It is a "thing of beauty" at how good they look, the wear pattern is excellent!!! During each run the lap times remained consistent from start to finish and never fell off! This tire is simply amazing and is as fast as the other tires some of the guys have been running at the track. To say that these tires are impressive is truly an understatement!!!

As Christian said last night, they show promise and are at least worth trying out.

I just commented that, as Rob states, they show promise. If they truly last 2x what the other tires do, then it might be worth it to "look into it". If they are no good, or make no difference, then we don't need to mess with them.
If the transition was ever to happen, we would have to ensure that M&M sells out of the Solaris and everyone uses their tires up first. This is not an overnight change.
Solaris tires are great, and they have a great Price Point, but if these Sweep tires work as well, last twice as much and cost 26-27 dollars retail, would you guys not see the benefit of getting them?
In any which way, John Lee, the owner of Sweep Racing USA actually contacted me about the tires, he said he's give me a free sample to test once they became available.
FYI, a little info for you guys:
-Muchmore and Sweep racing are THE SAME TIRES, sweep broke off from Muchmore about 2 years ago, but the tires are still made by the same factory and they are the same compounds.
-Sweep EXP tires are made to be a 3-4 run tire. This is the tire that wears super fast. They are meant to be an all-out high performance tire. These are the tires with the yellow wheels.
-Sweep QTS is the same as the Muchmore and the Solaris tires. This is a fact, straight from the tire manufacturers.
-The tire I will evaluate is called the "OG" tire. It was a tire designed for SPEC TIRE racing. The purpose of the tire is long wear and low cost. Solaris tires are marketed as a Spec tire, but they were not designed for this, they are just re-badged Muchmore 36's.

I'm not trying to stir the pot on the whole tire discussion but I just wanted to mention that the new Sweep "R40 all weather asphalt SPEC" tires work very well at M&M. The last 2 times I raced I was unable to get Solaris so I tried different Sweep compounds (28, 32, R40) and found that the harder R40 SPEC tire worked the best. They felt about the same as driving on the Solaris tire and showed very little wear. I noticed that the Solaris tires would begin to show signs of the dreaded ring of death after only a few runs, however I've got about 10 runs (practice, heats and mains and a couple practice runs at Mike's too) on the Sweep R40 SPEC tires and they have not yet developed a ring. In fact it takes several runs just to wear the molding line off. They seem to really hold up well, and I'm quite surprised and impressed that these "harder" tires have such good traction. BTW, they are $28 and there may be a source to get them for a couple bucks less. Just my $.02

Before it even starts.
NOBODY is changing the SPEC TIRE. It is still any Solaris compound. Let's change subject please.
I was talking the other day with Danny F about starting a point series at the track. Would you guys be down?
I was thinking every other Thursday, 8 total dates, so it would take roughly till the end of summer to finish it up. Best 6 would count towards the series. We would have 17.5 boosted and 17.5 non-boosted mode.
I'll try to get some sponsors on board and hopefully we can secure some prizes for the participants and winners.
