That depends on your motor as well. Some motors have more timing from factory, some less. Ultimately it is a temperature game. Try and see. I run 3FDR on my car, other people around me run 4 and this is on the same track.

If you want to get really into it, you need to find your motor's best point (torque/efficiency) and gear it to stay there as much as possible. If your track was wider, you could probably give it a bit of timing on that, depending on how long you're at full throttle. Our track has two long straights, and some twisty bits in the middle. My gearing is a bit long, but the motor doesn't get hot at all, so I guess it's okay. A bit shorter would give me better acceleration though in the twisties.

This is where you are. That is why you need all the torque you can get. Heat is an indirect measure of that (and it doesn't tell you if your motor is timed correctly either - that's what you need to work out).

For the record, my motor is a Hacker Skalar which has oodles of torque (compared with others' cars geared lower (shorter) my car accelerates just as easily). I know some of the other drivers have the LRP X20 and Tekin Redline Speed II (I have both of these too). This is another test you can do.

Don't just ask for someone else's gearing and try to use that in your car. It will most likely not work at all for you. Or at the very least, ask someone with the same motor and same motor timing and same car weight AT THE SAME track as you.

thank you for all the information, i'm a newbie and would like to know what type of spur gear would fit this car? i have not seen tamiya spur smaller then 116T in the parts list

I use Kawada 48p spur gears in my 417 with no issues, I'm sure they would be the same for the 418. I find 48 pitch gearing to be better for blinky

I run the Xenon spurs, love them. The Panaracers work great too.

Tamiya's spurs and pinions are metric pitch, they don't fit with other pitch. The selection from tamiya is quite small as well, compared to that of others already mentioned. But most of these others don't make metric pitch gears, hence most people forget about Tamiya and go after market (you've seen mentions of 64 and 48 pitch).

Xenon & panaracer = same thing! different packet.

The stock spur works fine with 64p pinions. It's not "identical" but it is so close it doesn't matter. Even TRF drivers run them (with non tamiya pinions)

0.4mod and 64 pitch are virtually identical. You can run 64dp pinions with the Tamiya spur.

I won't bore you with the calculation that proves this as I am sure you are knowledgeable enough to do it yourself.
