I've used Josh's break in process on my OS 18 CVR engine, and loved it. I was able to break in the truck much faster than the usual "idle for a few tanks, blah blah blah" method. Also, after the break in, the engine just flat out rips now. I finished the break in process that Josh outlines in about 3-4 hours, that's including breaks for cool down. Its an awesome method and my CVR has been bulletproof.
For my Mugen X12 engine, I've used a different method before I even read Josh's article. What I have done in the past at my local track, is run it up to 2/3 throttle in short 3-4 second bursts for the first 4 tanks, and then lean out with each subsequent tank, up to 7 tanks. Then I would start doing full throttle pulls, each about 3-4 seconds, up to the 10th tank. From there I would feel the engine is fully broken in, and just tune for high performance on the 11th tank and so forth. With this method, I have 2 gallons thru my Mugen X12, and its a beast. Even to this day, I beat OS 12 TZ 5 ports on our back straight (150 ft straightaway). The power range of this engine is unbelievable. And the engine STILL holds a tune each day.
I will be using Josh's method when breaking in my new OS 12 TZ 5 port engine (which needs a Mugen MTX4 by the way ), as well as any new engines I purchase. Its a great break in method and just flat out works.

I used my T5 last weekend for the first time ever... stripped all the teeth off first gear twice ( I thought it was the mesh first time) , stripped all teeth off second gear once, took teeth off both the rear belt and side belt..
I have never driven anything with so much HP.....nothing came close down the back straight...NS3's, RB V12, JP etc...

Just got through running another race weekend on my newly broken-in OS 12tz in my Mugen MTX-3. At my local club track, the temperature never went above 200F degrees and I had more than enough power to catch one guy that was running a Novarossi NS-5. This was at my local club track that is 100 x 120 with a lot of twists and turn (set up more for electric cars than nitro cars). Most of the days runs, the engines temps stayed between 160F to 190F degrees. I will be getting another one for my Tamiya TG10-mk.2 very soon. It is one bad a** motor for sure.
