Jilles,

The videos are really good. The Tamiya 416 looks like a really nice ride but for some reason I never see the car at carpet tracks in our area. Are they well equipped for carpet racing?

They fair pretty well. They took the win and several top spots at last years IIC in rubber-tire modified. This year me and my other Fan-boy friends are hoping for a repeat...

Jilles, what set-up you used on your esc during the last TITC race?

Maybe if you don't mind in your future races, your car set-up sheet to include your esc set-up as well. Thanks.

Mugen10,
For carpet rubber tyre the car is excellent. I quess at your hometrack most guys run foam tyres? As foam is not very populair worldwide, Tamiya made the 416 for rubber tyre racing, the car performance not so bad with foams, it only needs little stiffer chassis.

IQ0,
At that time I ran 5 cell 3.5, gearing about 8.6
Power program 4 on the nosram with 1 autobrake and 1 initial brake.
This was still the old version speedo, on the new I should go for 5 or 6 and autobrake 2.

Jilles,

Even though I'm not running the Tamyia car (009), the information has been very helpful.

I'm wondering if you want your car to transtiion from left to right quicker, like to get through a chicane a little faster what might you recommend?

Thanks,
Mark

Hi Gilles,

In the video a see you use the steel wheel axle. Do you ever use the titanium or aluminium versions? And why? Thanks.

Jilles, do set your steering travel to full lock? And do you use expo on throttle or steering?

Was that when you were using Nosram Matrix (1,4,1,1)? And when you use Nosram Pearl its equivalent to 1,5/6,2,2 as you mentioned? What sort of motor temp did you target?

Hi Jilles, good to know that you are much easier to access through the forum and thank you for your patience with us. Only got a few questions all about in-board and out-board toe and a little about the shocks.

1) What effect would you get if you use in-board toe vs out-board toe on the front of the car?

2) Again same as above in regards to out board toe and in-board toe for the rear. If I am running 3deg rear in-board toe Vs I use a 1 deg out-board toe with 1 deg alloy rear upright and reduce the inboard toe to 2 deg, would the car feel any different?

3) Full rebound shock Vs No rebound shock, which to use on which kind of track.

Thanks in advance.

Hello Jilles

A question regarding rubber tires on asphalt:

Do you always sand / roughen your tires before using them on asphalt?
With a truer such like the one from much more?
If yes, which grain size of sanding paper? 400? 600?

Or do you use only braking cleaner before applying the traction compound?

And what about carpet?

Thanks...

This was covered a few pages back. They almost never sand/scuff the tires before a race. I think there was only one exeption where they tried that and it didn't really help...

Mark,
Thanks for your comments.
Try thinner oil to get more reaction in chicanes, harder springs also helps.
Disadvantage is overheat tyre faster.

Barry,
We always use steel wheel axles, I think for the 415 there were Aluminium available but haven't seen them for the 416.

Dameetz,
Normally I use 95% steering travel. I use 0% expo on throttle but most of the time -20/-30% on the steering.
Speedo is true, 1,4,1,1 is same as 1,5/6,2,2. In modified you don't have to worry about motor temps, even in Bangkok you will not go above 80 degree.

Mike,
1) I have tested a lot with inboard toe-out in front and it gives more steering in middle and exit corner, but to little respons going into corner.
So I not run much inboard toe-in, I always use 1 degree toe-out on the front wheels to get better stability on the straight line.

2) I haven't played with this a lot, on the 416 I always use inboard toe-in, always use 0 degree hub. The only differents it makes, using 1 degree rear hub is that you will not change the wheelbase too much. I can't really give you an answer what is better.

3) 90% of the tracks I use zero-rebound, only some carpet races with rubber tyre I use little rebound.

Nutsisneat,
Don't bother use any sand paper for rubbing tyres, most of the time I will not use it. My experience on carpet tracks is that new tyres are good from the beginning and you can use the tyres with same performance for a long time.
