Never heard of anyone cheating with sensor timings. How does that work?

We could see sensors go away at some point - I've heard high frequency injection works on motors with higher pole counts, and I've read about at least one open source ESC project dev playing with it and getting it to work with the newer 32 bit MCUs. Think it might have been AM32?

In the US that is no big problem because there you only need to run blinky with most spec classes and is a lot allowed on the motor as lonk it has the determined amount of windings. Over here Stock classes are run with motors with a locked sensor timing and many people have found ways to create more sensor timing out of it.

Which one do you think is more reliable? I'd assume sensorless would be the way to go, fewer parts to fail, right?

Depends what you want. Are you a basher then you do not care sensored, are you a racer then you want optimized control and so sensored. Are you a crawler I can imagine you want sensored to prevent cogging.

I'm just a basher and have both sensored and sensorless and no matter how closely I pay attention for smooth motor performance I can't tell a difference between the two.

The sensored systems are just smoother in every way for throttle inputs and braking. I don’t mind sensorless if I am always full pin on the throttle but if you drive and need throttle control I prefer sensored systems hands down.

now if you like the old school vibe then brushed motors are also smooth running but they are going to wear out faster and require more maintenance.
