Hey guys, idk why but for me new USGT tires (with seam removed) are faster, more consistent, and more hooked up than an old set.
We race on low grip asphalt. With what I've read, the soft balloon tires are good due to air gap. I've also read that one can race on them till the tire rips and shows the insert.
at the suggestion of another expert here, I've tried limiting body roll due to the extra grip of balloon tires, but my results were opposite; the car is like a drift car 😒 is there something else needed to change?
So is it really true that they are faster than a new set? Why is the opposite true for carpet? I read they don't like them once they balloon out. It seems to me that they get more loose and not as precise as a new "square" tire.

As the tires balloon are you readjusting the suspension to keep the ride height the same? Every week I would lower the springs to keep my ride height at 5mm in front and 5.2mm in the rear. If I replaced a worn out set of ballooned tires with a new set, the ride height would be down to 4mm and then I'd adjust the ride height back up and start all over again. I found that on asphalt the older ballooned tires worked better than a new set.
I have a set on right now that was stable and had decent steering. Now that they've softened up and ballooned up, they do not feel as precise. I can't really explain it, except that they felt like slicks when they were new and now I have to baby the tires coming out of corners.

I have never had much luck on new tires Outdoors. Most of the time I use used tires from carpet. If new tires work for you that's awesome. You just have to do what works for you.

On asphalt almost a second faster going from new sets to ballooned sets for me. Good tire sauce and tire warmers helps a lot this time of year. I stick to buggy grip or FXII for asphalt. Carpet sauces and mighty gripper made the tires very drifty. Also make sure all of your used tires have the beads glued up well. Every car that I've seen that had bad handling had sidewalls coming off the wheels or the chassis was scraping through higher speed corners. Don't forget you will get more chassis roll with grippier tires so you have to stiffen the rear shock to keep the chassis off the ground. Maybe that's what you are experiencing?

I like Mighty gripper, but the tires should be dried well before you go out. I let it dry or get mostly dry in the pits, then wipe thoroughly.
Cleaning with buggy grip after the race helps too.

I did have the issue of the tire being unglued last time I was at Cal, but they have been always glued/checked since then. I usually would get snap oversteer going into a sweeper at the end of the straight if I didn't glue them up.
At the last Turkey Race in Santee (generously sprayed), I started the day practicing on balloons but ended up on new tires for the rest of the day. My new USGT tires were about the same as 36 GQ slicks.
Its hard to explain but the old set feels numb and not as responsive. I did, however, see that sweepers or constant load corners were good, but 180 turns and direction changes were not.
For sauce, I use SXT max 3.0 and tire warmers around 60 deg C.
