Default Trf419 super short shocks help

Hiya folks,

I have the trf419 super short shocks on my car but it seems to be leaking.

The car drives well enough but there is a huge mess on the suspension arms at the end of the race day, and the shock shafts seem to be perpetually wet with shock oil (dripping wet).

I'm certain that I've built the shocks correctly. Is anyone having the same leaking situation? How do I correct this?

Thank you!

Alexander

This is a common problem with the kit blue orings. The clear orings (part #53574) are much better. Since replacing them I haven't had an issue. If you must use the blue orings I would suggest fitting a .3 mm washer next to the orings and cover them in green slime. This will make the leaking less pronounced but won't completely solve it. Also, I had issues with the gear diff leaking. To fix this I installed the larger shims (part #42313) and the aluminum pulley (part #42310). After these updates my car is as dry as it can be!

I had the same problem until I couldnt take it anymore and just went with Axon replacements. Been problem free since.

Ive tried AE's green slim on the orings and didnt solve anything, the green slim just mixed with the shock oil. I tried different orings and that didnt help, tamiya xrings didnt work, orings from different companies didnt work. They all leaked. I made sure the shaft were smooth and free of any scratches. Nothing seemed to help.

Unless you are running tamiya races where you have to use tamiya products, buy yourself set of Axon shocks, you will save a lot of headaches.

For me, all of my kit even my XV-01, uses the XRAY clear o-ring. No problems ever since. No shims needed no green slime needed.

I use TRF X-rings with 0.1 - 0.2mm shim - leakfree.

There is not need for Axon or any other shock. Just use Muchmore or Tamiya or Xray orings mounted with silicon grease to avoid damage to orings. It will fly.

+1
tamiya clear o ring for damper, no grease/green slime but oil. Zero rebound with 1mm hole in the cap.
xray diff oring +0.1mm washer with green slime, 1.5g oil.

works both great.
Cheers

To fix the leaking here are the two things you need:

1) Tamiya 53574 TRF Damper Rod Guide & O-Ring Set (4 Sets) (Only use the o-rings)
2) Tamiya 54730 TRF Damper Rod Guide Hard 4/pcs

You can use green slime as many people do, however I have moved over to using slick honey/slickoleum as it has better anti-washout properties in my experience, which prevents it from mixing with the shock oil.

One last note, you may be having severe leaking issues if you are damaging the o-rings as you place them onto the rod. You MUST lubricate the threads on the end or they will cut into the o-rings. Be very careful and gentle when you slide the o-rings over the threads.

Good luck!

Hello everyone I am trying to get a good base line setup for my TRF419. I am planning to race at Galaxy hobby in July for the TCS race and I have no idea where to begin with a good asphalt set up. should I just pick a 17.5 setup on PetitRC? Total newb with the TRF419, I miss driving my TRF417 Raceberry since I sold it. Hopefully I can get it to perform similarly if not better.

I race at Galaxy and have a good setup for my 419xr. I'll send you my base setup when get home, Or you could come by my tent next race, I'll be the only one running the 419 there. The setup isn't completely TCS legal right now because I am using smj and x-ray springs on it as I also run down at seatac, but it should be close once you get Tamiya springs on it.

Sent you a PM. I'm planning to use Rod Canare's setup from PetitRC, is that similar to what you're running?

Its somewhat similar, but it looks like in that setup, his roll centers are pretty high. I run larger spacers on the bulkheads to lower the roll center and I run wider blocks up front. Either the E, F or G. And depending on the track I sometimes run .5* of front arm sweep to get more mid corner rotation.

My current setup is similar to Florian Joos' stock setup from Deventer. The main difference to that setup is that I still run the E block in rear, at Galaxy it's pretty slick so having 3* or rear toe is really helpful. Also, my rear springs are 2.6 not 3.0.

This is my last setup of 419XR. I would only lower to 5,2-5,5 if you will be racing on a nice, flat track. Mine is higher as I raced on bumpy one.
Top deck from 419XWS is really more preference than real need.
Hope it will help.

Would it be ok to use a 419x setup on the original 419?

It should be OK. That is my guess as I never raced 419. Major change comparing to manual is lower mounted upper arms (2mm instead of 3mm), thicker diff oil and springs. You have to find best setup for yourself and use other's more like a guide or starting point.
I raced TB04/Exotek with standard TRF shocks (similar to 419) and again I prefer stiffer front. If you do not have progressive I would use 3.0 Front and 2.8 Rear
