New to crawling

Yes, it does have a non adjustable drag brake. The WP1060 is the best, simple ESC on the market. If you double your money you'll get double the ESC with the WP1080. The WP1080 is the best reasonably priced crawling ESC on the planet, period. There's no reason to spend crazy money on a crawling ESC.
I would suggest any 45 to 60 amp that is water resistant and can handle 3s. My son and I just got done building a gmade r1. We used the esc out of a rtr rc10sc rs and Novak 13.5 with no sensor wire. It works perfect with no clogging. He has been using 2200 3s packs. He has the throttle turned down to 60 percent. The motor and esc do not even get warm. There's like no load. Cus there geared so low. I see no reason to go brushed. His can crawl super slow and precise with gobs of power . (We just used extra electronics that we had laying around. Good luck. Have fun.

A crawler system should have instant reverse with no delay, a drag brake, and sensored is a must if you're going brushless.
I don't ever see a need for anything more than 3S in a crawler. It's a crawler not a rock racer or a rock jumper. It is my opinion that if you need more than 3S in a crawler you are doing something wrong or you're not really crawling.

Plenty of 2.2 pro and sporty guys run 4s these days too for similar reasons. If I ever change my pro motors I'll go up a coupe turns and run 4s instead of 3s.

Fyi the rtr esc has drag brake is water resistant and can handle 3s.Here are the stats. https://www.teamassociated.com/parts/details/29143/ It does not have instant reverse. Sorry for the bad advice. (At the same time your telling him to go back to Stone Age brushed setup) LoL. His works mint.we tried a HW also with sensor and instant reverse . Put hw in sc. Seemed super hard on drive train. His can go kinda fast. There is zero cogging. That Novak 13.5 on 3s has power for days. Just him hitting the brakes and locking all 4 wheels seems brutal. He is going more rock racer. I wanna get 1 too. Cheers

I'm familiar with that esc, the maximum the drag brake goes up to is 10%, nor nearly enough for crawling with.
If absolutely does cog too. Just because it's within an acceptable amount for you doesn't mean it's not there.
I've run plenty of brushless in crawlers. My u4 wraith run a tekin rok412 2300kv and castle mmp setup. I also know what it's like running sensorless when the sensor wire has come unplugged, and it's rubbish for crawling with.

Scale class 3 wraith, running a 40t Torquemaster. 4s is smoother, more powerful and more efficient moving a near 3kg 2.2 beast. Only geared 11/60 so it's still fairly slow, but has all the pep you could want for clearing small gaps.

For 2.2 I recommend sensored brushless motors like the Holmes Puller Pro or Tekin ROC412 with a Mamba X ESC. But again, I would never use 4S myself. Different strokes for different folks.

Smoother than even the best sensored brushless system
Less susceptible to water damage
Inexpensive
etc

He's asking about electronics for an SCX10. Brushed is fine and I think it's crazy that anybody would need 4S in a brushed SCX10.

Brushed isn't stone age. Brushed is still used extensively in crawling for a few reasons.

I already have a brushless wraith, it's plenty smooth and has gobs of torque, but I wanted smoother, hence the decision to go brushed in it, as it is a dedicated competition scale class 3 crawler.
I've run 4s in my scx10 as well, but just on trail days where the extra wheelspeed is more fun. For proper crawling 3s is fine. That was also when it ran a 40t Torquemaster, it's got a bit more speed with the 13t crawlmaster in it now, yet to try that on 4s.

I used a basic XL5 just because it was what I had laying around.
Other than Drag brake, it did the job. Its not Ideal, but for a WP ESC, its def. a cheap option.
I've since switched to the Hobbywing QuicRun WP Crawler Brushed

For starting out, I wouldn't spend a fortune on an ESC, and you can get away with the lower 60a ESC, but overall I like my QuicRun 80A.

Here's my 2 cents. There is nothing wrong with the Traxxas XL-5 esc. It is reliable, smooth motor control for slow crawling, has 5 programmable modes and can run 2s or 3s. It sells for under $50. This is the esc that comes standard in the TRX-4

Not all XL-5s have a drag brake. You have to get the crawler specific model.
