New to crawling
 

I'm am just getting into crawling. I'm looking for suggestions on what esc to run and best and most efficient battery to run. I have an scx10 kit that I will be using for scale crawling. ESC needs to be waterproof also. I've heard of holmes hobbies and the traxxas xl5 esc.

Do ot go with traxxas, i would suggest the holmes hobbies, if you wanna stay on the cheap just get a stock axial ae5 and a holmes hobbies 27 turn with a cc bec.

What kind of bec are people using so that I can run 3s on a 2s esc?

Castle 10 amp BEC. You can run a 3s if the ESC is rated for it. For a scale truck, most of the time a 2s and a 20 turn motor is plenty. When they get too fast an scx chassis will tend to be hard to control because that are pretty narrow.

DON'T go with Holmes. There's no reason to spend a lot of money as a newbie. A couple of us in my crawling club use the HobbyKing X-Car 45A ESC and RC4WD motors. This combo can be had for roughly $21 not including shipping. Now the ESC is not waterproof, but a can of Liquid Electrical Tape changes that.

Or you can try HobbyWing's WP-1060 ESC. The Axial AE-5 is a rebranded version of this and it is more expensive. Just go straight to the OEM and buy HobbyWing. It's a 60A, brushed ESC that is waterpoof. Both ESC's have a drag brake, but neither are adjustable.

For great batteries, go to HobbyKing and check out the Turnigy or Zippy batteries with the mAh, C, etc that you desire.

HobbyKing also has BEC's.

You could always pick up a good used castle sidewinder esc and bec. It'll run brushed or brushless and 2 or 3s and easy to program. This has always been my favorite crawler esc and ive ran novak goats and tekin fxr's.

does the wp 1060 from hobbywing have drag brake? in the pics ive seen one jumper is for NiMh/LiPo and the other is F/B/R F/R F/B

I read that if you use F/R, because there is no brake, it is like having drag brake. Hope that make sense. I just got a 1060 as well, but have not installed it yet.

Yes. F/R = Instant Forward on F (Throttle Forward) ... Instant Reverse on R (Throttle Reverse) and Instant Brake in Neutral (Throttle Neutral).

Yes, it does have a non adjustable drag brake. The WP1060 is the best, simple ESC on the market. If you double your money you'll get double the ESC with the WP1080. The WP1080 is the best reasonably priced crawling ESC on the planet, period. There's no reason to spend crazy money on a crawling ESC.

I would suggest any 45 to 60 amp that is water resistant and can handle 3s. My son and I just got done building a gmade r1. We used the esc out of a rtr rc10sc rs and Novak 13.5 with no sensor wire. It works perfect with no cogging. He has been using 2200 3s packs. He has the throttle turned down to 60 percent. The motor and esc do not even get warm. There's like no load. Cus there geared so low. I see no reason to go brushed. His can crawl super slow and precise with gobs of power. I really think you could use a 480 size brushless motor. ( the ones that look like 540s but are just finned up) . (We just used extra electronics that we had laying around. Good luck. Have fun.
