U.S. Vintage Trans-Am Racing Part 2
#8551
Charlie Barnes of CAL RACEWAY in So Cal held an event I believe it was last year (2014) that was basically a "training day" - He had a couple of PRO drivers who did a driving seminar, and set up portions of his track with cones and other markers...to help teach guys how to break, turn, and more. ( I need to do it again, because I don't get to race much the past couple years... but it really helped me as a NON On - Road guy, get a feel for certain things.) It would be cool if more tracks had something like this, even if it was just a couple hr. deal once or twice a month - it really helped the rookies and newbies to on-road racing.

thats a good idea!
To be honest sounds like the track issues are a bit of both.
Though, guys who have been doing this for awhile I think should know better how to address the issue with people. Seems lately guys who are fast are also fast with the mouth.

I'm not sure how close 1-cell 17.5 would compare to 2-cell 25.5 though.

As a racer, I think it is important for the race director to not just call the races, but actually watch the racing and get to know the racers at their track. If the race director wants to split up mains to create a better racing experience for everyone at the track, I think that can be a good thing. Nothing is worse than having a great day of qualifying/racing at the track ruined because the main turned into a bash fest.
If there isn't a good way to split up mains and the best option is to run all cars in one main, the race director has some other options at their disposal that I rarely see used.
- If the start of the race (not just the first 5 seconds) is a bash fest, restart the main. Let the drivers know that you want to see good racing for the first few laps before it becomes an official race to the end. We all should have more than enough battery in our VTA cars that this shouldn't be a problem.
- If there is a car that is driving badly during the main (taking the leaders out or driving through the back-markers), the track director can impose a time penalty on that driver or even tell that driver to pull his car off the track. No reason to let one bad apple ruin the bunch.
- If there is a new/old/less-experienced driver who is laps off the pace, pull them aside before the main and make sure they understand good driver etiquette. Maybe take the opportunity to drive their car around the track to make sure it is mechanical sound.
----------
We all want good door-to-door racing in VTA. But lets not mistake that for a bash fest.

I could see breaking up the mains, in a class like touring car...
but this is Vintage Trans Am!!! This class is specifically designed to have fun, and what could be more fun than a 12 car main on a track designed for 8 cars???
If someone is complaining about too many cars in the main, then they're in the wrong class.
But that's just me.

I've seen races restarted in the past as well, but very rare. Especially during the main. But the guy whomade it through screams bloody murder (and most likely caused it).
I would like to see it used more often.
