guys, i just got some dynamite cvd's for my maxx the other day, and when i first started to run the truck around, the wheels started to wobble. so i took it in and the wheel nuts where loose, so i tightened them up(just like before). then on the second try, it did it again! the stock drivshafts didn't do that, whats the prob? happened to a friend at my track and he was furious when his wheels came off when he was leading the race.

none. only the spur
now my truck is too much rev on the first gear with the 52spur. i need 16cb to increase the ratio. the top speed is also affected using bigger spur. obviously

other than that...it climbs everything effortlessly.

jfc_tech, just to let you know, i had a savage at one time, but it was destroyed(i cant tell you why, might make you cry) .so i got the maxx, i guess you can call me a wimp because some say i cant handle the power of a .21+ monster, but i just say that i had one at one time, and they are all monster trucks in the end. but anyways, i think if i put a little loctite on the threads of the cvd's, it should hold the wheel nut on.

i started an Official Tmaxx Thread, just to let you know. but i will be checking in time to time to answer any savage q's.

Well, as some of you know my Savage was entered into a weekend of racing - including a 4 hour endurance race. I'll start off by saying that the truck racing was particularly interesting this weekend because the new Revo was making it's debut at our club. I joined the que of people who had lined up to see the truck in the flesh.

First of all, I have to say that in terms of design and quality, the Revo is a major step forwards compared to the Tmaxx. Everything is very well laid out and the chassis has a nice kind of symmetry that I found very appealing. The other thing of course is that everything is slung very low, so the truck has a much lower CoG when compared to most other MT's. To be honest, it's more like a Truggy than a MT. The underside of the truck looks to be quite exposed, far more so than a Savage and it concerned me that only some little plastic guards protected the servos. The brake was not protected at all. The UJ driveshafts looked quite burly. They are telescopic and booted for protection, made entirely of a nylon/plastic material.

The Revo was very eager to start up and the run in was complete after about 6 tankfuls of fuel. In that time the glow plug was replaced and the truck seemed to run well. Now it was time to race it!!!

At the meeting we had the usual assortment of Tmaxx's, Rustlers, Menaces, a (non operational!) EK4, Savages etc. Besides my Savage, there was another highly modified Savage with a Werks Racing Picco P3 .26 engine - it was very punchy and popped wheelies all over the place. It also drank fuel at an alarming rate

Well, I'm afraid to say that 'out of the box', the RTR Revo just didn't cut it for racing on Grass . It was over geared, and the fuel tank lid didn't seal. Fortunately, a Savage tank lid seal was used and the Revo ran much better. Compared to my Savage, coming out of the corner and onto the straight, my Savage was away well ahead of the Revo. My Savage was at full speed by about half way down the straight - the Revo was just about thinking about changing gear by the end of it It was the same through the twisty parts - the Savage launches itself from turn to turn, where as the Revo was much softer. I imagine the Revo was easier to drive, but ultimately a fair bit slower around the Track. Over 5 minutes, I was lapping the Revo 2-3 times on a fairly large track - Savage 13 laps, Revo 10. That's about 7 seconds per lap.

To be fair my Savage isn't stock. It faired better against the other Savages. The Werks powered Savage was driven by our local nutter who drives like an absolute looney . To be fair, his driving was of a far better standard than usual, so I imagine he's been practicing! Between these 2, it was very close with the Revo just gaining the advantage.

During the final, it was showdown time. My Savage pulled away and lapped the Revo 3 times - however, in the closing stages of the race, my Savage lost a wheel nut and the I was forced to finish the race on 3 wheels. The outcome was that I won by 2 laps - on 3 wheels

I'm probably one of the only people in the world at present that can claim to have beaten a Revo with a 3 wheeled Savage

At the end of Sunday's racing, I had another good look at the Revo. The bottom A arms look quite weedy, however, they are infact very durable for normal use. It took a few big tumbles, plus on certain occassions it took some serious 'abuse' from my Savage. Nothing broke. The truck's springs were waaay too soft and the shocks required some heavier shock oil. All things considered, the Revo out of box is still much better suited to racing than a either a Savage SS or Savage RTR .25 and I suspect that even for bashing, the Revo will not embarrass itself - even against Savages. It's definitely a durable truck too.

My main gripe is with the engine - it's better than the older Tmaxx 2.5 engine and seems to run reliably so far. But it's still soft compared to the big block engines we all know and love. Thank the lord that New Era are doing big block engine cradles. Yes! Just imagine a Revo with a Nova Rossi .28?

Hmmmmmm

The endurance was started on Monday. To my knowledge, it's one of the few events where Nitro and Electric cars race head to head. This is the way it works:

It's a team event. Each team has it's own transponder. Basically each team should have 1 car only on the track at all times. Each team has at least 1 member marshalling at any one time. 2 tracks were laid - one inside the other. The smaller inner track was designed for electric cars, set such that the club's fastest electric driver could attain 14 laps over 5 minutes. The outer track was for Nitro cars/trucks and set so that the fastest nitro driver could attain 14 laps. In actual fact, it is very similar to the WRC super special stages. The teams decide which drivers are going out first and the racing begins.

Pitwork and smooth change overs are all important. Should technical problems develop, teams have to have contingency plans and good communication. If certain cars are having cells/receiver packs charged, teams have to synchronize their actions so that there are always 1 car plus an emergency car ready at all times.

Due to bad weather, it was decided to limit the endurance race to 4 hours, rather than 1000 laps. I had read of an endurance race being won by HPI and their Savage team, so I gathered that my Savage should do really well.

The teams consisted of:

Team Flange (my team)

B4, Fireblade, MBX4RR, Hyper 7, Hyper 7, Savage SS, Revo

The A Team

RC10, RC10, B4, B4, Yokomo BC, Tmaxx, Tmaxx Hyper 7, Losi XXX, Rustler.

Team Wankel

MT2, XXXBK, Cat 2000, Hyper 7

Lilly Savages

Savage .25, Savage .26 (outlaw), Savage .26 P3 (Werks)

The racing was typically frantic, but over a much longer time scale. It's quite strange feeling your legs going numb on the rostrum. Oh, and your eyes drying up from lack of blinking!

By the end of 2 hours, the order was:

Team Flange 285 laps
The A Team 260 laps
Team Wankel 216 laps
Lilly Savages 176 laps

So much happened, it would be impossible to list all the highlights. Suffice to say it was a real spectical for all involved and crowds of locals/holiday makers gathered to spectate. Awesome.

By the 4th hour, the final results looked like this:

Team Flange 567 laps
The A Team 529 laps
Team Wankel 405 laps
Lilly Savages 360 laps

What a great day's racing. Take my advice: if you want to make a really good excuse to get some major track time, why not organise a team endurance race!!

The Savage was the team's secret weapon. What it lacked over the 1/8th buggies, it made up for in terms of consistency and tank capacity. It seemed to go on & on, my ported S-25 was actually very good on fuel and ate up the miles. If there were technical probs with other cars, I could do a splash & dash pit stop and go out for another 15 minutes without hassle. The Ramtech Viper 40 Alloy wheels were used throughout the day and proved once again to be totally race worthy.

Please excuse my ramblings and 2 rather large posts. I hope it makes for an interesting read for some of you!

Regards

Horatio

great job horatio, i'm sure my maxx couldn't of handled that! did the rc10's race against the monster trucks? and also, how many gallons of fuel did your team go through? and when you talked about the emergency car, does the truck has to be exactly the same as the main car? because at my track, some guys bring three cars that are all the same because the rule is if you must switch out a car, it must have the same chassis, engine, tires, body, and reciever pack. did your emergency cars have to be that way?

Cheers!

I used about 4 litres of fuel over the weekend. Not too bad considering how much fun was had. Bang goes another gallon!

Regarding the emergency car, each team had numerous cars. The smallest team had only 3 cars. It was down to each team to ensure that there was always a car on the track. If they failed to do this, every minute they were 'carless' they were basically losing laps and wasting time. They could use any car they wanted, so for example if The A team lost their Tmaxx's due to unreliability they would have to change over to one of their other cars. They had 8 other cars to choose from, having the largest team.

Assuming 14 laps per 5 minutes was 100 percent performance, Team Flange's 567 laps over 4 hours was an 84 percent performance. Some of the lost percentage would be used up in change overs, fuel stops and technical problems. So 84 percent is pretty good.

The A Team was on 529, so put in a 78 percent performance.

Team Wankel 405 = 60%

Lilly Savages 360 = 53%

In all fairness to the teams that took part, most of the experienced racers were racing in the top 2 teams. It was also much harder the fewer cars you had. Lilly Savages for example had new racers racing just 3 cars. Considering this, they did a sterling job.

could one team have more than one truck on the track at a time, therefor giving them more laps?

No - only one car. Each team only had one transponder each. As one car finished a session, the team would have to quickly bring it in, change the transponder over and then send the fresh car out. With the Nitro cars, this was quite interesting as Nitro cars also have to be fueled, warmed etc and NOT stalled whilst waiting in the pit lane to go out.

Savage owners have no need to fear the new Revo. Even though the Revo is a good car, the Savage can still hold it's own - especially considering that everyone here 'tinkers' with and improves their examples.

Stay proud!!!

Default sorry guys, posted this in the zilla thread before i knew about savage thread :(

hey guys, just flickin thru the thread, im about to get a savage ss kit, thanks for the heads up on the engine cleaning before start up, hopefully will prevent future problems. I've ordered the mp servo mod for the throttle with the kit and also the 3racing alloy steering set up and alloy servo horn, sounds like a worthwhile mod. Do you guys reckon trinity 25% monster power would be ok in the .25 engine or too feisty for run in? Thats about the only good quality fuel available here (oz). Where can i get some shock sox from? looks like a good idea to save on cleaning time. Sorry for all the questions, any help would be greatly appreciated, keep up the good work guys, excellent thread!!!

I posted a reply in the Zilla thread also, but basically you'll be alright running-in on 25% - the important thing is that you know to flush your engine clean before attempting to start it up for the first time!!

Welcome to both threads and the world of Savage bashing/racing!

Don't really know how's the best way to get shock socks in the land of Oz - internet probably. Perhaps Savage Central, Tower or places like them.
