The Losi 454 and LRP Spec 3 engines are identical. But the backplates aren't.

It might not even be an issue. But I do know it used to be fitting Losi Mach engines in other RC's. Might not even apply anymore, so forget it.. Unless some Savage guy drops in and says for sure.



Ssssoooo... Just went and looked at my LST2's.. The backplates are identical on the 454 and Big Red.. So forget about it.. The BR has to be a direct drop-in, so the 454 must be too.. Though not having a Savage anymore, I can't say %100.....

So I found the lrp.28 for 140
And the losi 454 for 135

So for price there about the same.
So if there basically the same how do I choose??

The LRP backplate fits FOR SURE and is a nice blue color. That's worth $5.

Yeah, if those are your prices, get whichever color you like more... And if you can find a Dynamite Big Red cheaper, go for it too... It's supposedly an improved version of the LRP Spec 2, but without the increased port count of the Spec 3(as far as I know..) I really, really like mine... Would shred in a Savage too...

I got my 454 for $105 shipped from jennysrcparts btw, and have seen them go for even less before. BUT, there is no pull/Spin-start assembly included I think.. I had Spinstarts laying around though, so no biggie... A lot of people sell their RTR 454's new and unused though, so if you don't have a problem with that, you could probably save a few bucks if you care...

I looked it up and the 454's are for the truggys. They have no pullstart.

Doesn't matter which one you get either the lrp .28 or losi 454, I've had the lrp. 28, and it was an excellent engine, plenty of power and easy to tune.

Right - what he said... There are two versions - the truggy version from the Losi 8T 2.0, and the pull/Spin-start version from the XXL.

Its not that the backplate wont allow the engine to bolt to the mount, its the fact that the spin start housing is wide and you wont be able to get your starter shaft to line up with it because of a cross brace on the savage. You can run the engine, but I believe you'll have to run a pull or roto start.

An XL savage will fit whatever engine you can stick in it. The reason for this is because the engine is a good ways away from that cross brace, but a Savage .21, .25, and X all will be harder to fit an engine with a big start housing.

Basically, I think any SH engine with the spin start is going to be hard to fit in a savage X. I cant confirm because I havent tried, but do some searching on your own to be sure if you dont want to end up buying extra parts.

See the plastic tube with the screw in the end of it going through the chassis. Directly under the rear of the engine.... That is where you run into issues with the big backplates on the non XL trucks. Also, since the backplate is so large, it also limits the gearing you can run because the engine wont slide over as far as it would before.

Alright thanks for all your opinions but due to the fact that I haven't seen a losi 454 on a savage x and people saying that the mounts on the engine won't fit. I think I'm going to go for the lrp .28.

I'm a member at savage central and see guys post about the Losi all the time so I'm quite sure it fits. But I own a LRP .28 and k is for a fact it fits. Enjoy.

The LRP should fit in the Savage. I have sold a lot of the SH Engines to Savage owners and some of them are local where I have seen it work. The PT2802 3-port engine has been the most popular with its great bottom end power. If you want to tear the Savage apart, go for the 8-Port, but make sure you have upgraded the driveline. The .28 6-port has also been a good seller for the Savage. All of these engines are available with the HPI Roto-Start.
