Hi Gary,
So you have hardwired between the dyno output and the ESC input(I use a Deans plug there), and then from the ESC to the motor(Hardwire). By "octopus", I assume you are referring to the three clips from the motor checker? (Yes)
I also remove the flywheel for timing tests.

It should be noted that the differences on the dyno between my D4 and the top players from last year are small - like 2% - so, to quote Captain Obvious - if you hear at the track that a motor is fast, it will most likely prove itself on the dyno.
Depending on the motor, 5 to 10° timing can make a world of difference in torque/power/current draw. As not all endbell timing marks are even close to accurate, even between identical motors - as you are probably aware - once again it is always best to start with safe gearing and work your way up to the peak performance for your particular motor.
