I want to start with an apology if this question has been asked and answered somewhere in this thread of 2500+ posts. I tried a search but didn't find my answers.

I recently picked up a used 1/8th e-buggy with a gen 2 RX8 and 1900 T8 G2 motor, and the hotwire interface - gen 1 I guess since it's a black case.

The motor and esc seem to be very clean and in great shape... But, the fan is missing a few blades. Guess that's still a problem since the Gen 1 RX8 I had 3+ years ago also ate fan blades LOL!

I'm looking at fan options. I read somewhere that the fan is only rated at 5 volts, but the voltage fed to the fan is dependent on the main pack voltage. So a 4S or 6S is way over voltage for the 5v fan.

Is this true? Or is the voltage out to the fan regulated at a certain voltage?

If so, what's that voltage?

What's the best replacement fan option?

Any way to stop breaking blades?

Fans braking is often a product of the environment that the esc is being used in. If there are lot of small rocks that will find their way into the shroud area, you'll break fans.

You can use some small "screen" to help prevent this, but make sure it doesn't slow the air flow down.

Most 1/8 buggies when setup correctly don't' need the fan to begin with, fyi.

+1, I cant get my buggy ESC over 1-2 lights on the temp scale.

Good info. I kind of assumed it was foreign debris getting in the blades as opposed to the blades flexing and hitting the heat sink.

Any idea what voltage the fan is fed?

I'll keep an eye on the temp meter lights no doubt. I just want to replace the existing broken fan and was looking at what options there were besides the Tekin fans.

I've found 30mm x 30mm x 7mm fans in 5v and 12v.

I would just try to measure the voltage myself, but since I just got the buggy, I dont yet have any 4S packs to test with.

Can anyone answer if the fan is variable speed or just on and/or off ??

Yeah, I've seen those. Two fans for about $21.50 after shipping.

And they are 5 volt.

So if there is any truth to the fan getting main battery pack voltage, it's only a matter of (short) time before the 16.8 peak voltage of a 4S pack kills them. Dont even want to think about what 6S will do to a 5v fan!

A 12 volt fan would hold up better if it's getting 16+ volts than a 5 volt fan.

And aside from the voltage issue, there is the price issue.

Just trying to get the best deal and longevity on what may be a disposable item with off-road dirt, dust and rocks killing the blades.

The fan isn't fed battery voltage. They're 5v fans.

don't use fans on the rx8 unless you race on very grippy tracks/ super hot days, it's absolutely not needed with a proper configuration

Hey Randy, quick question. My RX8g2 is over 120 days old, but I'm pretty positive a post came out right at the warm up laps of my A2 run this weekend. I came off a larger jump, flash of light, etc. I'm no big sponsored guy, but I'm competitive and my equipment is kept in very good condition and everything is checked before every race. Below is what I do to my vehicles nearly every weekend, so lack of maintenance or abuse is not applicable here.



I think the only saving grace was the EB48 body may have starved the fire and stopped a fireball. Amazingly enough, it appears that only the ESC may be damaged. The servo, chassis, battery are all good. I haven't tested the RX or motor yet. The ESC was mounted on kyosho gel, as well as the tekno o-ring setup, so the ESC has about as good of protection as it will get.

I'm kind of getting the run-around from support on if this is covered or not. They staying things like the wires are too short (which makes no sense since I clearly have 3-5" service loops between the ESC/motor not 1" wires), etc. As well, on the motor, do I test it and see, do I send it in for a check just in case? They haven't answered that question in the email either.
