Default Storing lipo's

OK. So if I only race/practice once a week what is the best way to store my lipos? I have traditionally kept them fully charged. I use them on the weekend and then put them away in a lipo bag for the week fully charged.

Is this bad?

What should I do?

Sounds like you are an expert. Please share with me the thread that answers my exact question. If you can't find it then don't bother posting in my thread. Like I didn't search before posting.

Storing them any time at all fully charged is supposed to raise the IR and will degrade performance over time. I charge mine to storage voltage after getting home and leave them that way until I get ready to use them and then charge them. The other thing I've seen talked about is not charging to full 4.2v/cell, but 4.1v/cell - that doesn't seem to cause the prob attributed to time at full voltage.

Thanks for the answer now let me follow-up with another (stupid) question. How do you charge to "storage voltage"? Let say I am charging a 2S 5000Mah lipo. What settings on my charger would I use and to how many volts would I charge to?

how do we know what charger you have? why don't you read the manual on your charger to see if it has a storage function?

I just run my packs from a full charge and make sure they are between 3.7 to 3.9 volts before storage.

swarb,

Please stay out of my thread. You are an a$$. All these have lipo storage in the title and not one answer my question about 1 week between uses. You are worthless to my thread so I would appreciate it if you would just stay out and go be an a$$ in someone else's thread.

Moderator- sorry for the language but the guy is an idiot.

Lipo capable chargers typically have a lipo storage mode. This mode determines if the lipo needs to be charged to storage or discharged to storage. Typical storage voltage is 3.85v/cell - this is a resting voltage. Quoted storage voltage ranges from 3.78-3.92v/cell (Hyperions recommendation) so its not exact.

Duster. thanks for the help. Didn't realize the storage function would know to charge or discharge. Thought it would only charge and since I finish at the track with them charged, didn't know that would work. I will give that a go.

Check your charger manual - older chargers couldn't take eh heat from discharging and they would only charge to storage. If you have a newer charger, it should take care of storage from either direction.

Hi Todd, long time!

Most lipo instructions I've read tell you to store lipos around 50% charge. I know this is not very scientific, but this is what I do: After my last practice or race, I simply store the battery and car.

I know that a race will take about 1700-2000 mah out of my battery so for a 5000 mah so that's roughly 40%. I'll leave the battery that way until the next practice or race, either charging the night before or day of. I've never had a problem with this method.

Hope it helps!

This is why -

4.20v = 100% or fully charged
4.03v = 76%
3.86v = 52% (long term storage voltage)
3.83v = 42%
3.79v = 30%
3.75v = 20% (minimum discharge volts for longevity)
3.70v = 11% (this and below shorten battery life)

Lot of chargers have gone away from %'age as basis of storage mode - his Bantam charger is set for a storage voltage of 3.85v/cell.
