Default Lipo Swollen?

Hey guys I have a problem and id figure id ask the experts on this forum, I have a 4cell 4800 lipo pack in my Starter Box and i took it out to ship home and found it swollen on one side. Is this OK? everything works just fine, just wondering if i should get another battery. Will it be safe to ship? Thanks again!

Do you have any kind of low voltage protection for it in the box? It may have gotten overdischarged. Have you tried charging it? If it shows the slightest sign of getting bigger while charging, its not safe to use further and needs to be replaced.

I don't think its safe to ship, it may be safe to continue to use, but shipping it is another deal altogether. If it gets hot along the way, it may go off and start a fire.

Go look on eBay and get a low voltage alarm for a 4S. It attaches directly to the balance connector. Mount it so you can see it and it will alert you as you approach low voltage. Exmaple of whats available on eBay -

Looks l;ike the Chinese vendors have taken this over.....

What I'd worry about is letting it get real hot somewhere along the line. If you can fly it, I'd consider doing that, but, I'd put it in a big ziplock bag and put it in the refrigerator and let it sit at 35-40F until you get ready to leave. Then it'd go in a lipo sack and fly home with you. Refrigerating kind of puts the cells in a dormant state (this is great for long term storage), so they're less likey to have an event. When you get home, leave it out but keep it in the ziploc bag until its back to room temp so there's no condensation inside the lipo.

I would worry it could get very hot sitting somewhere if you just shipped it and exposure to enough heat could drive it over the edge and it'd go off in the back of somebody's delivery truck. My wifes incoming merchandise is shipped UPS for the big stuff and USPS for small stuff and we've gotten melted merchandise from either.

I don't order lipos at this time of the year cause I don't want them exposed to that kind of heat.
