Pro Trak

I don't know why no one has made a thread for their charger yet. Anyways I'm planning to get one and I'm very convinced from their website. I have owned a GFX and really liked it, but I want a smaller charger that doesn't take up too much space and is lighter to lug around to the tracks. I have a few ?'s.

1. What are the dimensions of the charger? Doesn't say on their website.
2. Do I need the thermal tray to charge NIMH? I have seen pics of world class driver's pits and they are using the Trinity batt. fan stand.
3. Is the Intensive Care System only for NICD like the webites says or would it be good to have for equalizing NIMH?

Any replies or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. This sounds like a wonderful charger and the produce support sounds like the best around.

Yes the Protrak is a wonderful charger. Maybe it doesnīt look as good as other chargers and the old case feels a little on the cheap side but there is a new one right now. Beside this it works awesome. There are some wellknown chargers from the German brands but I prefer the Protrak.
Dimensions are about 175 x 175 x 65 mm + wires. In inch itīs about 7 x 7 x 2.6

You donīt need the thermal tray for charging NIMHīs itīs just another option. Beside this the tray is using not only one but three thermal sensors and is showing all of their readings in the display. But the deltapeak cutoff is really working good so Iīm not using the thermal cutoff even as I have one.

I donīt have the Intensive Care System. Iīm using the Robitronic system which is working really good but takes some time as itīs discharging current is 1 amps. Iīm planning for buying an additional Rayspeed unit but itīs not easy getting one currently.

I agree with V12 it's very good charger.

Tres 05-16-2004 06:37 AM

I do like mine, it takes a few times to get used to the menu, but any charger with all these features does.

NismoSkyline17 05-16-2004 07:28 AM

Thanks guys. It seems like this would be the charger for me then.

I'm not sure if it's out yet but he has a new version with a 30 amp discharge and some other features i think.

V12 05-16-2004 10:01 AM

From what I found there is a 20 A and a 30 A version but no other differences. The 30A version isnīt released yet as they have to wait for some parts. Release date is end of July.

crimson eagle 05-16-2004 10:16 AM

Hi Nismo,

I do the sales tech support and basically anything you need in the US. if you have any question's please e-mail me.

Dimensions - V12 is very accurate approx 7" x 7" and about 2.5" tall. I think the new version will be slightly wider.

You can charge NiMh on peak no problem, I've been using temp detect for about 4 months but it does have some trouble when the ambient temperature rises. The thermal tray actually uses 4 temperature detection sensors.

The ICS will work for NiMh no problem, Phil has probably not changed that page since he first introduced the ICS about 8 years ago.

Hi all,

I set my charger up in an aluminum case with the power supply temp detect module and my com lathe. All I need to do is open it up plug in to the power and it's ready to go. See attached.

About those face plates, are those anodized aluminum or acrylic plates with some designs underneath that you just bolt ontop of the existing plates?

I'm referring to the tekin plates...:)

crimson eagle 05-17-2004 10:06 PM

Hi Kiyano,

I've ran a few sets through with your graph program, Phil sent it to me about a week or so ago, looks pretty good, I can appreciate the programming skills you need to do this . Phil is sending me some updated ROMS to make better use of the program so I'll be able to get a better handle on it when they come in. I have been using the terminal program with Excell a few times, one thing I like about that is I can print labels from the data and get many sets of cells on one graph. You have any thoughts on these facilities for your Program?

kiyano 05-18-2004 05:54 AM

crimson eagle,

Thank you for your reply.

You have an interesting idea. I examine whether these ideas are realizable. There is a page which can write in feedback of a program among my pages. If there is a new idea, please write in there.

Thank you.

crimson eagle 05-18-2004 04:09 PM

Hi Kiyano,

I'll check out your web pages some time soon, probably after I get the new software set up and cycle some cells with it. I was just wondering about the possibility of making your program a one stop place for all the things you need for you cells.... Yes I know this is asking a lot and I certainly could not do it. As I understand your program graphs the pack and the cells and takes the final data for the pack and the cells. Would be great if all this info could be printed off on one page. the other two things which come to mind would be: -

1. Graphing pack curves for many packs on one chart.
(for comparison purposes)

2. Printing Labels for the cells.

Yes I'm sorry to repeat myself but I'm thinking about it all as I type.

I have created an Excell Template for myself but it is still takes about fifteen minutes of work after cycling the cells. It would be great (and maybe impossible) to be able to just print it all off when the cells have been cycled.

Just to digress a little, I've been thinking about ending my mail with the following phrase (please excuse the spelling)

Ichy beeru ku desai!

NismoSkyline17 05-18-2004 04:12 PM

What is the newest version of the 20amp Pro Trak?

crimson eagle 05-18-2004 05:07 PM

10.56 I think is the newest version.

NismoSkyline17 05-18-2004 05:09 PM

Ok just looking at buying one off a friend of mine. He has the v10.25.

rccardr 05-18-2004 05:32 PM

I've had my Pro-Trak for about five or six years. Awesome piece of equipment. Phil's service is the best in the business. Can't say enough good things about this company!

crimson eagle 05-18-2004 09:53 PM

Nismo,

If you would like it upgraded to the latest version, I offer that service in the US.

NismoSkyline17 05-18-2004 09:56 PM

Thats what I prolly will do. I think I will wait till July to up grade it to the 30amp.

NismoSkyline17 05-18-2004 09:56 PM

BTW how much would it be to upgrade to the 30amp with the blue backlight.

crimson eagle 05-18-2004 10:08 PM

Hi Nismo,

Phil and I are working on that, we will know better nearer the time that it's available but I do know that to go to 30A and the blue display is not cheap as the parts are expensive. I'd also imagine you would want to go to the new case Assy also?

I'll make it known when the info is available on this forum but you can e-mail me any time about anything else. at the address below.

NismoSkyline17 05-18-2004 10:11 PM

Thats kool. I might hit you up for an upgrade to the newest version in the mean time. How much for the upgrades except the 30amp up grade? Besides I don't need to discharge my batteries at 30amp anyway.

Essnowyt 05-18-2004 10:18 PM

I got a few questions. First off nice charger it has lots of features. The question I have is, does the charger have a motor run feature? If not, is there a plan to add that? Second who distributes this unit in the states? I plan to be in the market for a high end charger in 6-12 months. Thanks much.

crimson eagle 05-18-2004 10:20 PM

Nismo,

$57.00 will get you the latest software, some internal hardware replacement, the unit calibrated and tested and return shipping to you. To accurately calibrate the unit I do need the cell monitoring leads that were supplied with the unit.

NismoSkyline17 05-18-2004 10:23 PM

There is an option motor stand that you have to buy to run a motor. Crimson eagle does all the selling and servicing for them.

NismoSkyline17 05-18-2004 10:24 PM

Kool. As soon as we are done with the TCS here in Memphis, I'll send it to you. Gives me enough time before our next race.

crimson eagle 05-18-2004 10:27 PM

Ess,

The charger does have a motor run in feature, an accesory is required to use this which is approximately $60 shipped (varies with tax requirement and exchange rate).

I do all that you would need in the States, supply, tech support, upgrade repair etc.

I've known Phil for about 8 or 9 years, we raced together for a some time while I was still in England. At the turn of this year I offered my services as I now live in the US, this provided a great opportunity for both of us, he accepted and this is where we are right now.

crimson eagle 05-18-2004 10:29 PM

Sounds good Nismo, drop me an e-mail when you are ready.

nnick 05-19-2004 01:46 AM

I experience the following problem:
I charge a 3300mAh battery at 5amps. At the end of the charge the informative message
indicates that the battery has received well more than 3300mAh and sometimes this value may exceed the 4000mAh.
I have set the peak value to 0.03. When I discharge the battery the information shown indicates a capacity of less than the value
shown when charging. The point is that the difference is usually greater than 300mAh.
I have gone throught the calibration procedure several times but I still experience the same problem.
The batteries have been bought a year ago and have been used regularly, around twice a week.
Any ideas why this occurs?

Thank you

Nick

Arthur 05-19-2004 04:29 AM

Just my guess....

Unfortunately the batteries aren't 100% efficient, so although the Protrak delivered 4000mAh to the pack, unfortunately some of that is lost as heat etc. Likewise on discharge some of the stored power is lost as heat etc. So what comes out won't ever equal what you put in.

So a difference of 400 over 4000 mAh is an efficiency of 90% - not bad considering you lose on both the charge and the discharge.

After I've used the conditioning tray to bring the cells down to 0v the mAh going in can be in the high 4000s, when you discharge you may be only going down to 6v so you'll never see all of the 4000 back.

...Like I say just a guess...
