Arrow What exactly is a BEC and why do I need it??

OK I am new to electric stuff and have a brushless revo and I keep seeing this BEC being talked about but noone seems to tell what it is exactly or why ya need it or what it does. I have been in this hobby for quite some years now so I'm not a total dummy on r/c stuff but with the electric stuff , ummm yeah I'm stupid.. Just trying to get some answers on all this so I can make sure my revo is as fast as I can make it with long run times..

BEC (Battery Eliminator Circuit) But... This is not what it does anymore or its not really the correct terminology anymore. What people are doing is running more of a voltage regulator.
Say your brushless revo is running a 4s Lipo 14.8 volts. Well you can't put that kind of power to a servo. So you run a (BEC or Voltage Regulator) and your servos are now only seeing the regulated voltage(normally 6.0V)

That's the basic idea.
Maybe someone with more knowledge can elaborate more for you.

well I have a hv-maxx esc now and use a Y harness and hook that to my throttle servo and the number 2 port on my receiver and run the 3 cell 11.1v 8000mah lipo on it so what is my servos actually getting with this set-up and do I need a BCE or voltage regulator??

Depends on your esc - they usually have a circuit inside that steps batt voltage down for the servos. At 3S you may be fine, depends on your esc specs. Should have tell you in manual. If you're curious and have a dvm, just measure it.

The one I'm familar with is a mamba max - if you're going to run anything over 3s, you are supposed to disable the internal bec in the MM and run an external. Stepping the voltage down from 14.8 to 6v in the internal bec generates too much heat and will cause it to fail. This is what I've done with my G2R, using a castle bec. The castle bec is adjustable via castle link - can adjust the output voltage to servos.

That's the link to the castle voltage regulator (BEC) the pics on the site should explain everything for you.
