Even though pick and pluck can be a pain what you can do is spray it with plasti dip or the rustoleum equivalent after you pluck out the foam. Get it in gray or black in color. It will keep the foam from coming apart over time. I have made several foam inserts this way and have had no issues with it coming apart.
