YMMV using this mythical method of setting timing on a motor. My 17.5 Motiv motor runs best at 3-4 amps.
This 6 amp method of testing motors is akin to taking gasoline engines and running them at a set amount of fuel consumption and making comparisons about how they perform on a racetrack based off of that.

While I agree, its a stretch, I think the point he was making is that every motor / engine is different and that what works for one, may not work perfectly as a rule for another. I can see this holding true with electric to the degree that some rotors / stators will behave differently due to mfr tolerances in build.
Thus the reason for the significant up charge on motors that are "team certified". Because they take them and test them for consistent specifications vs just giving you whatever passed a yes/no test at the factory.
At the same time, there is definitely value in a "rule of thumb" for a starting point which, in this case, is that many varieties of motors seem to like that range of amps.

So after recently experiencing some severe fading issues with my Monster Max 13.5T motor, I sent it into Trinity for them to help diagnose. Apparently they (Kevin) couldn't find anything wrong with it other than he felt the timing was set too low... although it showed about 46° on the marking of the end bell, Kevin was actually reading it at 43° and found that 48° was ideal at 5.6A for off-road, Kevin also recommended that I upgrade from the stock high torque rotor (ideal for 1/12 pan car) to a high rpm rotor. Kevin also felt that I may have my car under geared and suggested I go from 23/81 to 27/81 on my EB410.
Fingers crossed my motor is delivered in time for some racing this Saturday!
I've also decided to invest in a motor analyzer, Kevin said it was a good idea to periodically check/adjust timing.
