Trinity Monster 13.5 - Tuning help
Can someone give me some tuning tips on this motor? I'm not sure if this is just a weaker motor compared to other 13.5s out there but I'm getting walked by other cars at the track. I'm using it in my XB4 in 13.5 blinky.
Have it geared 78x25, end bell timing is 49 degrees. I have a motor checker so I can check the amp draw but I just don't know what's a good target for amp draw on a 13.5 Thanks. |
Not familiar with the FDR in the XB4, but I'm running that same motor in my Tekno EB410 with 24/81 gearing and it's by far the fastest car at my club... guys with the Tekin Spec-R motors aren't happy and are saying I must be cheating, ha! I bought mine from Team Eric Anderson Motorsports, so it's not certified, but Eric tuned the motor for me so I can't say exactly what the timing is set to, but it kinda looks close to 46°-47° if I had to guess:

Do you have the "regular" or the "maxzilla" one with the HT rotor? You can generally run more gear/timing with the HT rotor which leads to better laps times, especially in 13.5/4w.
The other thing with Trinity motors is that ever since they started offering the "Certified plus" motors for as much as a high-end ESC (!?!), they're basically admitting that's where the good ones are going and while I don't personally run anything from Trinity anymore, I've heard it in-person from several people who do that the more base model ones have become much more hit or miss as a result. |

I run 75/25 on a Schurrspeed 13.5SS w/12.5mm rotor on my XB4 so the OP should be in the ballpark on that. |
IDR on Tekno is the same 2.5:1
My Monster Max came with a High Torque Rotor and Low Resistance Stator, Eric Anderson marked the box with (10.5 - 10.6 - 10.7), I have no idea what those numbers mean? That being said, since 24/81 is doing well for me, then I would probably give 23/78 a try... I plan to drop to 22/81 tomorrow and see if that feels any faster, they won't have the timing loop on so it will be just a "feel" but I do expect to race on turf the following week... this week our club is racing on the 1/8 track and they alternate between the 1/10 and 1/8 tracks each week. https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4471/2...dafc35d2_c.jpg |

If it's the older Monster (does not say "MAX" on the back) then yes it will be a little doggy compared to the current crop of motors. If it's a Monster Max then it should be on par with all of the newest motors.

Accept the fact that you don’t have the newest motor and you are going to get beat by someone with equal driving skill simply because they are out powering you. Welcome to brushless blinky “stock” racing. We’ll see if ROAR’s new motor rules curb this disparity in the future. |
I like the timing on my Trinity motors around 56 degrees, they start to come alive over 55. Then I gear to the track and always use a fan.

If you have a ampmeter that can measure 10 amps just set it between 5 and 6 amps and gear it accordingly.

This 6 amp method of testing motors is akin to taking gasoline engines and running them at a set amount of fuel consumption and making comparisons about how they perform on a racetrack based off of that. |
