I'm such a rookie with this outdoor stuff. (Logic)I'm guessing the grape soda is for traction? Is it better than any other soda or just that its cheap? Does it get reapplied during the day or it just lasts all day?

Yes for traction. Grape has one of the highest sugar contents. It lasts all day. It is considerably cheaper than "professional" track prep options like VHT ($1 for 3 Liters vs ~20-30/gallon) and basically just as effective
