Radio for 1/5th Advice
A buddy of mine recently got a FG 1/5th in a deal and he wants a decent radio that will allow proper use of the braking system. Im very knowledgeable about almost everything RC, but this is new to me.
He only has about $150 to spend, so I told him he may have to go with something used. I think he will want 3rd channel brake mixing, right? How about the position of the third channel switch? I see several radios with the switch in such a weird place that it looks useless.
Thanks for any advice.

Try for a used 3PK. It was their top of the line radio until the new 4PK can out within the last year. Almost all the functions are the same as the new 4PK.

If you can get the 3PK I would go for that. Their available with recievers used on RC Tech for around $150 without 2.4 --and around $200 with 2.4. If he can--I'd encourage going 2.4 --these radios probably represent 80% of the radios used by the GLARCRC 1/5 scale racers.

Thanks for all the replies. While I am here I want to see if I understand all of this correctly.
If 3rd channel brake mixing is used then the 3rd channel switch would not be used under normal driving, correct? What if he wants to do brakestands and other fun stuff like heel/toe stuff? Are any of the 3rd channels proportional, or just on/off? Sorry for silly questions, but my only experience with 3 channel radios is cheap stuff with a button or switch that has two positions, on and off.

Yep its an onroad 5th. I believe it is throttle/rear brake on one servo and front brakes on another

I'm actually waiting for the 4PKS because I could use an extra channel in two of my cars. I have a 3PKS and always use mixing and or programmable mixing in my vehicles, I have a car with separate throttle/brake, one with two steering servos, etc. I use a switch with programmable mixing to kill the motor with the throttle servo. The throttle in my HARM car is used just to pull the carb one way, it returns by spring. I assigned a button for programmable mixing to move the servo the other way to bump a switch, giving me in effect a fourth channel.
