Default INS Box Air Filter ?

Order a new INS box for my 1/8 scale and it came with an air filter. The car kit I bought also came with an air filter but a dome/style air filter (please see picture enclosed). I have not been racing in close to 5 years and I have no experience with the dome shape/ style air filter, is the a new style and a better air filter and with more performance ?

Thanks,

Clint

The Ins-Box you have is called "XCeed-type" ins box. You have to use the round type filter element in it. Novarossi-type filter does not fit in it.

The easiest way is to use the same brand filter and ins-box. Other thing is that the onroad-filter you can also wash clean. You don't have to change it so often as you do with offroad.

and... with Novarossi, you actually have at least three different filters..
- The old big 1/8 type (same as the original Serpent)
- The new smaller 1/8 type
- 1/10 type with offset mounting.

Thanks for your post and info, but the INS Box I order is a novarossi and came with the old style filter. The used car/kit I bought came with the dome/style air filter and I just wanted to know if these dome style air filter were any better then the older bigger ones.

Hey Bro, thank and I hear you, again just was trying to get info on the dome style air filters since I have never used one before, it seems like the dome style air-filer material is a little stiffer then the older style one.

My personal opinion is that I like to use the bigger old style Novarossi/Serpent one in dusty conditions. For the clean track I use the Xceed-one as it's a little bit lighter in weight.

The only reason they wen to the dome style, is because of the INS Box, it's the only filter that fits without deforming. It offers no advantage / disadvantage only that it fits better. Most INS boxes are clones of one another, as such you can get filters from other manufacturers depending on what you can obtain easiest, OS, Novarossi etc.

I run an OS INS box, as seen in the attachment

No problem, if you were to cut them in half you would see there is not much difference between domed and square. Also worst case if it's really dusty or dirty I sometime run an extra piece of foam inside the intake holes, in Europe when they run in the wet, the modify drinking cups to place over it, so technically the water has to run up in the cup before reaching the intake.

I have attached a pic of a Nova INS that I added the Foam to. Although I do have to return slightly as the INS box itself is a restrictor, and the added foam just adds a little more restriction.

Just be happy your not running a SG / Mantua airbox, although it looked cool, weighed a lot!

WOW again good stuff Fan, the only thing I notice on both filters that I have is it seems like the dome style air-filer material is a little stiffer then the older style one.

If that will help.....

It is not the splashing water filling up an air filter. Water is in the air, when sucked through the filter water will stay behind if you did not use the right oil. A good oiled filter with the right oil will not hold water and will not block the airflow. But the water can go through the filter.
Some people are using diesel filters which seems to filter out water.

In the rain I do not use an air filter. I modified an INSBOX with some tubes so air has a free flow but dirt and water can not reach the carburator. With rain there is not much dust and other small particles in the air.....
