AB Mods Racing Engines

Well I am finally putting up a thread about my company. i also put the same thread up in the off road section as well :) Im usually pretty quite and set back but I think its time for a thread for those that may not know about AB Mods. This thread is also for those of you that already have my modified mills as I have done A LOT of engines all over the world over the years and quit a bit for members of this forum alone. I modify engines for Racers AND Bashers, On Road and Off Road. Also over the past year or so I have got into the world of ISC World Speed Challenge Racing and have had GREAT success and A LOT of fun in the process! My Team Driver Gary O'Conner has taken the win at the past 2 ISC Events using my modified engines and I couldnt be more happy about that.

So feel free to come on in and discuss anything you wish about my engines and all engines in general and I will do my best to help you out as always.

I think this will be a good place to come and gather to discuss all the information instead of it being spread all around the forum and hard to find. So feel free to check out my website and look around. I have some dyno sheets up on the site so you can all see some before and after dyno data from my engines as well as my Estore and Media/Magazine coverage that I have got in the past few years. I look forward to your posts and as I always say... Lets get the ball rolling!!

Well, I might be biased but this guy is the best. His turn around is fast and he's always available but what's equally important is that his engines are fast! I was prepping for the ISC speed meet last year and got in touch with Adam, looking for as much power as I could get for the Small Block class. He spent some time with me and set me up with a JLR Red Dot .12 and that little motor was screamin' at Rockingham Dragway. I won the class, setting the record at 78.69mph and beating a .28 powered Schumaker factory car. It was just by .05 mph, but we beat him!

There was more in the car but it was a one day event and I had another car I was running so didn't have time to swap the gearing. This year we're returning to the ISC meet (this time in Fontana, CA) with a much more aero body and an ABMods O.S.18, this biggest engine allowed in the class. I am confident of breaking our present speed record, just don't know by how much.

We're also going to be trying to raise the overall nitro record of 93.66. It's a twin ABMods Picco Evo2 P9R powered streamliner, weighing only 6.5 pounds. It's geared for 125mph but I'll be happy with anything over 110. It will be an ISC world record and I don't believe there is a credible example of anything higher than about 103. If so, please let me know.

Testing this weekend with the small block car. It'll be lower gearing, trying to sneak up on it's limit.

I'm confident that on November 15th, ABMods will hold the crown of the world's fastest RC car engines.

Finally got to run today. That little .18 has really come to life, way more power than the car has stability. It blew over last time I ran so I extended the splitter and installed a smaller rear wing.

The car was fast but the rear was not reeealy glued. It was close but needs a bit more at the rear. I smacked the curb once and I think I hurt the steering servo since it turns about 50% more to the right than the left.

I'm going to shorten the big tail and try it again. The gearing was conservative so once I have it stable I'll step it up a couple teeth.

Less than four weeks until Fontana.

Adam, you spoke of leaning the engine out for that last bit of power...how do you determine how lean to go?

When it starts sagging out you know ur too lean :D Give the engine a cooler plug as well as u should be able to lean it out and get some more power from it. ;)

Hey Adam, The mailman delivered the modded
P-9 Picco engine today. I can't wait to bolt it
in my DM-1 and pull the trigger on this weapon.
I'm sure it's going to be a great addition to my
arsonal and knowing it was your personal engine
makes it even better. Thanks for a great deal.

jeff1 10-20-2009 05:49 PM

Adam is the guy. I have a Picco Evo2 off modded by him. Its a powerhouse and it tunes very good. Great service! Highly Recommended

problemchild 10-25-2009 05:04 PM

I pulled 82mph out of my AB Modded .18 TZ today and there's more speed in there. I honestly think I can get this old dog up to 90mph with a small block engine!

I got the chassis and body issues worked out. The car pulls straight and stays on the ground (always a plus)

Team Kamikaze 10-25-2009 06:49 PM

Wait till you guys tried the ABMODS Nova Rossi Kangaroo engines

Colt4g63 10-29-2009 12:43 PM

I say some more people need to grab some of those Kangaroos up from you Sam and send them this way!

LOW ET 10-29-2009 12:52 PM

i've got an ab mods picco .28 in my truggy and i'm VERY pleased with it.

they will be modding my onroad .21 when i get around to buying one, lol

so lets see, what engine do you recommend for 1/8 scale onroad racing? :sneaky:

rageworks 10-29-2009 02:36 PM

Where is a dyno sheet on the Roo engine?
I have seen a few used Roo cranks for sale lately.
I guess thats all thats left after the come apart, huh?
What is the story behind the name of the engine and
how is it any better that the other hi-dollar novarossi
on-road .21 engines? Sorry for all the questions Adam.
But you know I have to do the research before dropping
all that coin on an engine.

Team Kamikaze 10-30-2009 08:15 AM

You must be referring to the old Kangaroo engines which was released a few years back, parts for this engine wasn't supported at that time by the old Novarossi On-Road engine distributor, that is why there are old cranks being sold and probably even the old crankcase are up for sale, Now we have a new Nova Rossi engine Distributor that is heavily importing the whole line of the On-Road engines, Anybody that has used the Kangaroo engine can chime in and express their experience with this said "Kangaroo" engine, this is one of the best engine of all time.

The Kangaroo engine is a very good club race On Road engine, you won't be disappointed or get the 35 plus 21 which is the next step up or better yet get both ;)

With a fairly short run up and maximum gearing in the car I am approaching 90 mph with my AB Mods OS .18. I have a couple more of Adam's rabbits to pull out of his hat for a bit more power and I'll be working with the Corvette body this weekend to see if I can get it to not blow over.

Only one more test session before heading to Fontana for the USR.

Colt4g63 11-16-2009 10:37 AM

Here some pics of Garys AB Mods powered twin engine stream-liner!

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y55...inerISCcar.jpg

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y55...linerISC-1.jpg

I should have some results of this unit in before too long. The ISC event in Fontana was this weekend and when i talked to Gary Saturday he was leading the pack in small block class by a pretty large margin with a AB Mods OS 18TZ powered TC3! :D I cant wait to hear about how the stream-liner twin engine car pictured above did. :)

problemchild 12-23-2009 11:01 PM

Well, where to start....The event itself was fantastic!!! We had almost 50 cars from one end of the country to the other, but all from the south....SoCal, Louisiana, Florida and NorCal. It was a great group of racers and I believe everyone had a great time. We're already looking forward to next year's event and maybe adding one in the spring.

Nine new racers were welcomed into the 100 Mile Per Hour Club with Tim Smith setting two new records over 100. A young man named Brian Pohlman brought his Electric Open creation ready to compete. He had nothing but problems on Saturday and only hit 40 mph. He and his dad worked all day trying to fix the handling and electrical gremlins. They came back Sunday with a big fin on the back and renewed power. He made a few unsuccessful runs during the day and in one of the last runs of the day ran 103mph!!!! It wasn't the fastest, his car wasn't the prettiest but the crowd went wild when he broke 100.

Nic Case had troubles but still went 154...the crowd was hoping to see a new top speed but 154 is nothing to sneeze at! We used two sets of timing lights so everyone's speeds were confirmed immediately.

To say my weekend was awful would be putting a positive spin on it. On the way down to LA (Thursday) I felt a cold coming on and for the next three days I was up very early (5am) and went to bed very late (midnight) and managed to end up with the Mother of All Colds! I was so sick I seriously couldn't think properly. I managed to add almost 9 mph (78.69 to 86.75) to my speed from last year but it wasn't enough to hold Bernard Heredia off with 89.95. I had one run of 96 on just one set of clocks so that's an unofficial speed. Bernard is forcing me to step up my game and I will be for the next meet. Unfortunately, I had crashes both days which took away tuning time but it didn't matter...I couldn't think OR drive!!!!

In the Open class I was worse...a couple weeks before the meet I changed the plugs in the twin to one step colder and they wouldn't run at all once the throttle was applied. I worked on the engines but was unable to solve the problem, only later remembering the plug switch. I'm going to run a test here at home with #6 plugs which is what was in there before. I'm sure they'll run like mad but I was unable to solve that when I was sick.

I drove home Monday and needed two naps on the way, missed a bunch of work and here six weeks later I still have a slight cough remnant. Since the Open car didn't run I'll run it again next year (I'm sure it's got well over 100 in it!), do some aero work on the small block car and will be pursuing the big block record as well.

Thanks to Adam of ABMods for continuing to stand behind me (who, coincidentally, was just as sick as I was!) and Jake's Performance Hobbies In Rohnert Park, CA for his many years of friendship and support and for cutting out the cool CF fin and elevator. I didn't have time to make them 'aero' but they look a WHOLE lot better than the wood fin I had in there.

Colt4g63 12-24-2009 12:28 PM

Everyone has a bad day Gary. But on most peoples bad days they don't go 96MPH on a small block!!!! Now that's a record that would be VERY hard to beat!! Why were the other set of clocks not setup for that run?? What a bummer :(!! Oh well we and everyone else knows it went that fast although its not "official" due to the other clock not being on and catching it as well.

Your an asset to Team AB Mods and we are all proud of your accomplishments!

Jusleanit 02-05-2010 06:54 PM

AB is that dude!!! Ive owned quite a few AB modded engines from .18's-.28's and theyve all run strong and cool!! Any engine i purchase will go to this guy!

btw, i sent u an email few moments ago:nod:

Colt4g63 02-05-2010 07:11 PM

Email answered

ALLSPEED 02-08-2010 08:21 PM

I have used AB's service's too. I must say they the best in the business. Fastest turn around and the work is second to none. All of the engines I have had modded by AB run extremely well. I will be sending my O.S. xzr to him as soon as it comes in. Check my sig. All of those engines are ab modded. I wouldn't have it any other way.

Colt4g63 02-09-2010 01:14 PM

AB Mods in now a Novarossi Dealer. That's not just engines its also pipes, headers, engine parts the whole 9.

Don't do that. If hey want to See an AB cut they must send him an engine. Until then they can watch it drive circles around them.

Colt4g63 05-26-2010 07:11 PM

Cuts are one thing.. Almost anyone can make some fancy looking cuts on a sleeve or crank... Timing alterations among other things are what really make these engines tick.

Valinote 05-27-2010 08:36 AM

Adam, what's engine is in the queue next to run on the dyno? I'm still lovin' the work you did on my LRP ZR.30x. Whatever magic you did, it absolutely screams on the top end! On the other side, I'm still trying to find a clutch that can handle all that low end torque without melting! Doesn't this motor deserve a spin on the holy dyno? :)

-Steve D

Colt4g63 05-27-2010 09:12 AM

Very glad your happy with the engine i did for you! I may have to put one on the dyno just to get some results on paper for everyone sometime. SO many request so little time

Your engine work are well proven anyway, Dyno will just be an icing on the cake!

bigjayjay1 05-29-2010 10:53 PM

Ive had a few engines for Adam the most recent was a Jx21 B01A still very fresh not even broken in totally this is the best engine Ive ever owned. temps are low running still rich but the power is amazing with run times that are off the charts. Ran it once just at Club fun many guys couldn't believe the amount run time Many people came over to check on the mill.

Colt4g63 01-09-2012 01:38 PM

Wow i cant believe its been this long since i have posted up on the on road forum! Just letting everyone know i haven't went anywhere... still at it! :tire:

phreaktor 08-08-2012 04:44 AM

You modded my old Team Orion Wasp 26 for me a couple years ago. I had it in my Ofna Ultra GTP with an JP3 pipe and tall gears on a two speed. That thing had so much balls it wasn't even funny. I will be contacting you soon about modding my OS 30vg for my new Losi XXL...

bertrandsv87 06-10-2013 09:50 AM

Testing soon.....

Just stopping in to say hey! Hope everyone is enjoying their AB Modified engines!

bertrandsv87 06-22-2013 03:58 PM

I had good top speed in my Ntc3 eventhough my tires were too low(57mm) for my track.... Some locals were impressed with the top speed and acceleration... I will run it with 62mm /63mm tires next time out... Thanks Adam for a great motor... I also had no problem making five minutes with a quarter tank left after five minutes, and constant punching.... I got third place in the Cmain with broken rear arms, bent hinge pins, and after a really bad start... The engine made my Ntc3 come alive... Wow.... I will setup the car better for the next meet for sure....

Colt4g63 06-22-2013 04:19 PM

Glad to hear! Keep me updated on your progress.

bertrandsv87 06-22-2013 04:36 PM

I will .... Thanks again Adam....

bertrandsv87 07-06-2013 05:22 PM

Here is my first race video, and my Pitman messed up at the start: I was first on the grid and he put me down last....

bertrandsv87 07-06-2013 05:53 PM

My tires were too small(58mm or less) in that race, but I still had top speed.... I took first place at 3:08 mark but overshot the turn, and crashed later on.... I got to say the motor is wicked fast, since I was accelrating late after the turns... I will get better at it with time, but I made the right motor choice as a newbie... Thanks again Adams....
