modded motor

I got to say the motor is wicked fast, since I was accelrating late after the turns... I will get better at it with time, but I made the right motor choice as a newbie... Thanks again Adams....

hi, what motor did you have modded? thanks, mike.

bertrandsv87 12-30-2013 08:59 AM

It was a .12 jlr tuned...

I have both the LRP.28 AND .32 for my gt2 kyosho. Which one do you recommened I send in to mod. I am looking for just balls out power and RPM. This is just my basher.

Still doing Mods for GT on-road nitro cars?

Colt4g63 06-27-2014 02:39 PM

Yes sir.... Still modifying engines! Just don't frequent the forums much these days. No time...

bertrandsv87 11-14-2015 11:37 PM

It's been a while since I posted here, but I just realized that my Ntc3 was way overgeared for my track...Even then the Abmods jlr tuned still pulled decently with 21/27 and 54/48, but I will be running 19/25 and 54/48 next season... I just found out about the dynotech racing 19t pinions(#8050) that fit the Ntc3 clutchbell... I also will need to have some new aluminum clutchbells made along with some spools and diff outdrives, in order to maximize acceleration..... The Ntc3 is not done yet !!!!!!

bertrandsv87 06-10-2016 10:21 PM

Ok guys, I finally had all the aluminum parts made and shaved another 39grams off the ntc3 drivetrain alone: 10grams off the clutchbell; 17grams off the rear diff outdrives; 12grams off the front spool..... That should give my Abmods Jlr a well deserved load reduction, resulting in video game type acceleration....... I hope my brakes will be up to the challenge...lol...

Sounds good!

I never had a chance to try different pipes for the NTC3s... What pipe are you currently running on this engine? The Picco pipe i tested it with on just a race mod for heat racing made in the 1.2 hp on my x-dyno with a VERY broad HP curve! But of course that pipe is discontinued and it wouldn't fit on the NTC3... And 1.2 HP on my X-dyno is A LOT of pwr for a .12!! My X-Dyno reads MUCH MUCH lower then the dynos i see going around these days... Some of them is reads as much as half of their readings.....

Those JLRs with some work are deadly! Had a customer of mine set some ISC speed records with it years back. :tire:

I think the numbers from dyno to dyno dont matter, or even the HP figures. But the dyno allows you to compare motor to motor, and also pipe conbos, and mods(on the same dyno), thats what they're good for.

bertrandsv87 06-11-2016 02:06 PM

I am using the Ntc3 factory team dual chamber pipe(with 10mm or so cut off the manifold) with my Jlr, and it had alot of power when my car switched to second gear. I knew that I was not in the powerband at all in first gear with the 21t/27t pinion combo, so I switched to 19t/25t pinions that matches my competitor's gearing... Dynotech Racing built me some more lightweight aluminum parts that got my Ntc3(1659grams) down very close to the minimum weight limit, from the hefty 1721grams it was before..... All in all I am happy with the progress, but I have not tested my new and improved ntc3 yet...

bertrandsv87 06-11-2016 02:26 PM

DYNO or not, I am very impressed with the power of my Abmods Jlr .12 motor, even when running a bit rich in a heavy car with the wrong gearing and not properly setup... The gas mileage was even more impressive: my pitman kept asking me why I was piting with half a tank left at the four minute mark.... I saw others pit, so I came in to pit too....lol... I could have taken a chance and run the full seven minutes without piting at all, but I thought it was mandatory to pit at least once... Others could not even make it to the five minute mark without running out of fuel... Maybe the smooth shaftdrive had something to do with that or maybe it was both the Ntc3 and the economic engine...

I think you have a very good combination is what i think. Fast motor fast car :D

I have been working with dynos for over 20 years now for tuning on full scale cars/engines... And nearly if not 10 years with my X-dyno on these small scale nitro engines. And I agree the dyno is a tool for R&D on these engines and a tuning for full scale engines PERIOD....That's why i haven't worried about changing how my dyno reads. I like that it reads low and ill explain why.

A dyno that reads lower takes more hp/tq percentage increase to raise the output number the dyno spits out. So therefore you have to make a larger % increase on a dyno that reads lower to see larger numbers. I hope that makes sense... im on little sleep today so bare with me folks. :)

I love your thread.

To me a dyno is a very important tool to record on what an engine is doing ,
so you can further improve its performance where areas need be!
Keep up the good work!...:D

Thanks for the kind words!

I have a 2.5R traxxas engine that I'd like modded. It's got few gallons through it, is it a candidate?

bertrandsv87 05-23-2018 05:15 PM

Wow, the Jlr is still getting better in my ntc3 with all the lightweight mods I did to the drivetrain, but I still think there might be another 5grams to lose on the AE three shoe flywheel, and another 20grams to lose between the AE two speed and AE/losi lcd axles.....

Great to hear the JLRs are still out there making that jam! Very wicked .12 engine!

I probably would have made it up to a few podiums by now if nitro racing were still alive here in NY...I guess I will need to start traveling...

Colt4g63 02-09-2019 06:41 PM

Website link for email is still messed up... Even with the new site which IMO is a huge downgrade compared to my old site... Not happy about that but working with the guy on that. ANYWAY If anyone needs to get a hold of me email me directly at [email protected] Thanks

I can tell you guys first hand AB Mods does amazing work . Ive used all the big named "modders" out there and Ab mods has delivered the best product time and time again. Don't get me wrong some of the other guys out there have given me a great product no doubt better than stock and some have delivered me paper weights and provided me zero info why they told me not touch the shim stack provided while I'm trying to light 65% in the hole. Ab does stellar work every single time I have sent him an engine. Just tell him what car you platform you are trying to power and its intent ie: track, drag, more fuel mileage etc...and he will deliver . His 35+21 in drag form is unreal ...I compared it back to back on the same day with same fuel vs a OS r21 before and it was a massive difference in power, rpm achieved and drive ability. I think has done a ton of those lol. I use the OS r21 as my control engine btw. He turned my Memphisto into a ballistic missle..no joke I'd like to compare His drag modded Memphisto to any other Drag modded .21..it straight gets it . He just sent me my lil .12 JLR which I'll be breaking in the next few weeks. The man knows what he is doing and his engines reflect it. He's done close to 10 engines for me know and each one shines in its respected platform. He did a Roma for me that I have compared to another modders Roma in my test buggy and its a bit faster even running 15 degrees cooler all things equal..it even sounds different on the pipe. I know this is the On road section but I have to mention his Fx 5k Royale ..this is my fave buggy /truggy engine and now I own 3-4 of them well I had him drag mod on for me just to see what we can get out of it and let me tell you its the fastest .21 off road I own and will murder any stock on road .21 out there in 132feet . I literally own 9 diff on road .21s to compare to so I have a good idea of their potential stock . All my engines are tested with a plethora of manifolds and exhausts which is critical to get he max performance or mileage out the car/truck so I wasn't just slapping on one exhaust and calling it a day. I am not sponsored by him , I'm not benefitting anything by posting this I'm just an extremely happy client and want to share my results that Ab mods has provided me.Just ell him what you are looking to accomplish and he will get it to you, be careful what you ask for bec if you tell him to make you the nastiest off road engine don't contact him saying your slower now bec the car wont hook or cant keep the car from blowing the tires off it .His Roma did just that to my buggy while dialing in the boat pipe lol. Ab mods Drag Roma+ 17t bell+50% nitro+ tuned Boat pipe = ruins tires literally killed them in 2 tanks in the middle from ballooning so hard they turned into pizza cutters on wot passes on the asphalt to the point of wearing through the rubber into the foam:) good show

Colt4g63 02-13-2019 02:13 PM

Thanks for the props and mention its much appreciated! And i believe i know who this is.... Had a known place send you an engine supposedly shimmed for 65% nitro that obviously had absolutely no clue how to shim properly for high nitro such as 65%... Was shimmed to death and back with a huge stack LOL. Its crazy the things some people do in this industry to sell an engine... from crazy claims to wild crazy cuts all over the sleeve and crank that actually hurt performance.. but oh it looks cool! :)

BTW guys my email seems to be fixed on my website. Just make sure to check your junk folders if you have send an email to me. Thanks

Pit-racer 02-14-2019 04:49 AM

Might give you a try this year. When my engines come in we'll talk.

NitroPhene 02-14-2019 04:09 PM

Yeahhh you know who that guy is , well no need to cry over spoiled milk at this point lol... expensive gallon of milk I just want to add lol. I give props where props is due . We are apart of a dying hobby and if I can get you some extra biz I know we can keep some people around nitro instead of going to the E side . I’ll be out of town tomorrow for a week but when I get back I’ll try to button up a couple build and get you some vids of your work before I start the move.

bertrandsv87 12-15-2022 12:12 PM

I did not have a chance to race my .12jlr ntc3 this year...Maybe next year....I have optimized, lightened the two speed to the max, and reshimmed every component in there on top of grinding the gearboxes for lots of clearance. Man, those gearbox clearances were really tight with pinion gears rubbing everywhere...Got them freed up now...Can't wait to test next summer....See ya...

I was only able to lose two grams off the three shoe flywheel...Oh well...Hopefully I can find a titanium racing two speed input shaft(ti9511)....I am also hoping to find another jlr tuned to be race modified when Abmods starts to mod nitro engines again...Nowadays the .12 engines suck big time....Cheers and Happy New Year Adam !!!!

Roelof 01-02-2024 11:56 AM

Only 2 grams??? That is 20%, that is a lot. But I see there is more room to take away material. I think there is for sure 1 gram more to find.

bertrandsv87 01-02-2024 06:13 PM

Correct, but most of that extra one gram is in the middle, close to the center of rotation, which will not make a big difference in acceleration...I guess I could try drilling the shoes to lose that one gram, but, since I already lost 10g with the(19T/25T) aluminum bell, there is not much more to gain from there now...On to the two speed from now on . I got 8grams left to lose over there....
By the way the two shoe flywheel can lose alot more weight, but looks very frail afterwards....
